Well there are people that don't know how to run Linux..like me..so how do you get something like that to run from repos.

wait a while. nothing in extras == no stable software available.

if you want something asap, go ahead with your own risk:

e: just answered to you in another thread. if that is not enough, please order a consult that charges you $1000 a day for spoonfeeding.

and still. all you have to do is wait, the software will come to extras eventually....

it involves the testing and devel repos, which i suggest you research via google and this site. after reading up on it you can make an informed choice ob whether or not you want to open your device up to the inherent risks of the code within these repos. if and after you do that, ill help you all day long..... if you still need it.

As someone mentioned your basic wav files may not be that "basic".

The same thing with "avi", it seems that most of you don't understand what AVI is, it's just a container which for reason or another usually contains for example mpeg-4, motion jpeg (from digital cameras, these files are famous not being supportd in most NMP's) or many other formats. The codecs handle decoding that data not the "avi".

If you download "avi" files from somewhere, you can't really tell what codec you need, or if it has been decoded with sane settings. I have a dedicated network media player which has dedicated hardware for decoding video and even it chokes on some dummy encodes. Putting every slider to 11 in handbrake or whatever like using high profile (High@L5.1) doesn't make the end result better but make the end result unplayable on lesser devices (phones, NMP's etc.) for sure.

To get better understanding what could be the reason why a certain file doesn't play it could be checked with for example mediainfo: http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

And "comprehensive" to me doesn't mean "everything", to me it means "most" or "the most widely used".

Well, I can play .avi files out of the box. So?

It's not like it came from nowhere. It's an expectation that came from the site itself. Now... it's one that surprises me, but with Mplayer and VLC both in either testing or extras-testing, it'll be a very short time that this is not a spot where people will have grievances.
But, as I read it here in this thread, it does play AVI files, doesn't it?

"Playing AVI files" means: Knowing how to handle the AVI container format.

"Not playing AVI files" would mean not playing any AVI file (no matter which codec), because it doesn't know what AVI is.

AC3 stereo audio works out of the box. But 5.1 AC3 audio does not work (player does not play file at all) 5.1 AC3 would be nice to downmix to 2 channels stereo or at least play left and right channel and leave rest alone.
