I can confirm that (on my n900) 3rd party earbud/mic combos do not work. I experience the same symptoms as my purple friend (the OP). I would guess that this is because the n900 cannot tell the difference between a headphone/mic combo and a TV out jack by itself and some circutry in the nokia supplied accessories does this job. Then again I could just be talking out of my arse

Paging doctor E. Lectronics!
Here's the catch (it was discussed in a thread before, but i can't really blame you for not findinding it, neither can i): there's an extra pin compared to non-mic headphones, which has do to with the microphone (obviously). The thing is there's either no standard for which one that is, or nokia threw it out and did it their way (which is understandable considering the dual nature of the jack).
