"Apple has done nothing unique..."

Sure they didn't. They didn't bring about the flawless user experience, good looks and utility, coolness factor and the whole app services sector. Also, they didn't just obliterated any existing smart phone in 2007 with their iPhone. Everyone ever since keeps comparing every phone to the iPhone.

"Nokia doesn't need to copy Apple, since most Apple innovations in the phone space were done by Nokia first."

That is a very bold statement. Care to elaborate?

and at the rate things are going we'll be using the iPhone for the next 5 years because apparently nobody is able to dethrone them. This is going to suck more and more because we will be at the whims of good ol' Steve.

Either way, what's the point of this thread? It's called supply and demand. End of story. There is demand for a 600$ phone so it's completely irrelevant how much it costs to make the phone.

This was a typical Nokia fanboyish statement. With that 1% Apple made profits, outpaced everyone else, while Nokia with its 42% lost money and more than 5% market share (mostly to Apple). How would you explain that?
You have just answered your own post. Clearly the N900 is underpriced

Maemo.org needs some kind of "Battlefront" sub-forum for silly stuff like this. The current "Competitors" sub-forum is mostly discussion about hardware options.

Having a separate sub-forum, where wanna-be market analyst could clash, might bring the noise-volume ratio down to acceptable level on other parts of the forum.

The point of this thread was to enable people like you to weigh in with their opinions. Noone debates the supply-demand factor here. I simply stated that the current cost is a rip-off. Is it economically sound, logical, planned, defendable? Yes it is. But it is a rip-off nevertheless. We are humans with emotions and rip-off is a subjective statement. Thanks for joining in though.

I`m not even close to agree with this thread ,
Sure comparing it with a laptop is a hight price but you have to add the cost of a cellphone + a 5 MP camera + GPS + the comfort of handling all this with your fingertips and put it on your jacket pocket (try to do that with a dual core cpu at 2.2 ghz, 8 usb ports, 4GB of super fast ram and 17 inch lcd).

With the way Apple does business, they guarantee themselves they will never dominant the market. They'll have a sizable marketshare but I doubt it'll ever cross 50%.

Any counter arguments?
Size.

It's a lot more expensive when you need to reduce the surface space. Just compare an N900 to the price of an unsubsidized iPhone 3gs.

There's an old Finnish proverb:

Persaukisille on kaikki kallista.
It is a little tricky to translate but the gist of it is that the less you have expendable income, the more cost-conscious you become.

Like you said, it is subjective. I just ordered an N900 from Amazon and don't consider it expensive at all. My first GSM phone in 1994 was more expensive even without adjusting the price for inflation.
