What I would really, really like is an NX server for the N900... just have a window on my PC with the n900 desktop in it.

NX is easily the best thing to display X on a Windows or Unix PC; it beats VNC hands down. If you don't know it, check www.nomachine.com.

Please create a proposal at http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/
Or post a link to the existing brainstorm item.

See the sticky threads in this forum and the wiki for more information. Thanks!

isn't it that you have to run a nxserver as primary xserver to be able to touch n900s' current display? this looks like swapping xservers to me...

There are NX packages in extras-devel. I think it's just the client packages though, ala qtnx.

Can you please provide a link to the NX client in the repositories? This is something I would really be interested in.

Thanks.

I can't find QtNX in extras-devel searching in the app manager but here is the link to it.

Has anyone gotten the qtnx client working on their N900? I couldn't find it via app manager either (with extras-testing & dev enabled). I get this error when I try to install the 0.9-3 .deb file downloaded from the repository site:
Unable to intall 'qtnx'. Incompatible application package.

AFAIK QtNX is ancient and only works with very very old nxserver (version 1.5 at newest, i think?)

I think the only currently-working and actively-developed free opensource nx client at the moment is OpenNX at http://opennx.sourceforge.net/

If someone could port it to maemo they would be a hero

running nxserver itself on n900 might be asking too much considering the limited RAM available. But you can use VNC and proxy it through nxserver running somewhere else on your network.

Actually, it ran very well on the N810

I don't remember doing anything special to build it for the N810 other than having to symlink quite a lot of stuff to the MMC (and that's something you won't have to do to on the N900). I grabbed the source from someone's Ubuntu PPA.

So I guess it's a "easy" task should you be interested (I don't have time at the moment, and be warned that Xorg takes ages to build).
