jcompagner, you hit the nail on the head.

MMS is old tech. It is yet another scheme to squeeze more money out for something that should be free, and Nokia has made it free through the use of actual email over data.

People who find it useful will exist, but as mentioned most of these are from the states. Heck I'm from the states as well, and I never used MMS. Was a waste, and was too specific on whether or not the recipient's phone could use it.

SMS is also a dead tech. IM over data is flat rated, and not an extra cost as is the current paradigm in most mobile contracts.

Seriously, while I can understand it being important to some, I see as a waste on this phone.

Here is my analogy. It's like having a Porsche and driving in 1st gear only. Your phone can do so much more, why crawl when you can run?

A better analogy would be like driving a Porsche with the blinker still on. SMS is not as important nor essential as the transmission/gears on a car.

Seriously, that was reaching.

SMS being ol' tech... sure, it came about in 1985. As far as instant messaging goes, ICQ in 1996 - so you can see how now we're in need of something new.

But what's out there that's being adopted? So far... nothing has replaced this old tech. It works, the gateways and functionality is still supported.

E-mail from phones? C'mon... e-mail is even older than those aforementioned two technologies. This whole "it's old technology"... you're talking about GSM (1982) using e-mail (1961) and yet you regard SMS (1985) and MMS (2001 or so) as old tech?

Until there's a viable option to quickly share - without the UI being in the way - quick information with others and without logging in... then what are those options?

Stating that it's not used by people is sorely overlooking that SMS makes up some 4 billion plus bucks for businesses per year. I don't know the MMS numbers - been looking - but there is indeed a need for something to replace it instead of... nothing.

as for who the writer of the article is, I'm no jessica fletcher or matlock but i work on the "he who smelled it dealt it"

Alot of people are forgetting that there are other markets with no mobile data plans or internet availability for billions of people. but There are millions of mms capable phones and networks worldwide.

The world is bigger then the country you live in.

gerbrick, as for the technology being old, yeah not really what I meant. What I was really trying to get at, is that SMS and MMS are gimmicks to weigh down the pockets of your favorite cell provider. Data is flat rate almost everywhere now. Seeing as the phone is being labeled as a mobile computer, it makes since that Nokia wants users of it to embrace desktop communication forms.

Comparing MMS and e-mail on a phone, is like comparing ordinary phone-talk and Skype on that same phone. When we have data with wifi or 3g (on ay phone for that matter), we don't need the phone capabilities either, but not including them is simply plain stupid. Nokia has made MMS on their phones for decades, it's not like they don't know what to do. Anyone believing that e-mail is better than MMS, may be correct, but they have missed the point alltogether.

Besides, not including it will force it to be made by someone else, and leaving core phone functionality to anyone, is insane regarding quality assurance and commercial aspects. There simply is no good reason for doing this, except maybe to prove a point or something.

on a personal note i have had the unlimited web bolt on on my phone contracts for 4 years..

i allways email pics..

mms has for me allways been an additional charger..

its simple i email pics,

the reality is i use email, im and skype more than i do the phone or txt..

i will allways of course use the phone, but txt is almost dead with mms.

i completly agree with the lads that say it was just a gimmick to make aload of money- for a short term untill unlimited data was on its way and STUCK....

very shortly everything will be unlimited and we will only be paying a flat fee for everything..

Not sure if you meant that misspell of my "name", so I'll just ignore it.

SMS, MMS are probably gimmicks to those that don't use it; but you know what? No gimmick has replaced it yet. And honestly, I would love for something to replace them. But nothing yet...

Sorry, but taking a photo, then sending it via e-mail isn't that hard, nor is it all that new either. And it does not solve when a person doesn't have an e-mail capable phone either.

And all this talk about data being flat rate, then it should be no problem coming up with a way to send/share via data only. Time for a new standard.

One that's not 20+ years old either. E-mail, it's ancient... I want something else that does not require too much UI either.

Found this article on why MMS is important:
http://www.gersbo.dk/2008/12/3-reaso...-traction.html

It is from Denmark, but should be valid for most of northern parts of Europe at least (including Finland )

Main pont is that MMS is gaining popularity, it is almost doubled in 2008 compared with 2007.

If anything can be said, it is that people not using MMS are out of sync with what is really happening.

i wouldnt call my self out of sync..

if i send 1 MMS per day that would cost me 15 euro's a month... why on earth would i spend that much money??

Yes maybe if mms would be way cheapers (5-10 times!!) then i would use it. but currently it is just a milking cow.

And is i said i dont know 1 person that uses mms.. not one..
Are they all out of sync??
