When you backup your N900, it creates a zip file including whatsoever you have checked to save (contacts, preferences...) and put it in MyDocs.
It's safe to copy this file on your computer, just in case something goes wrong

You're wrong buddy. Not all Nokia keep its lock code after reflash. N-series erased it's lock code to a default one "12345" after reflashing. My N95 does that. But you cannot reflashing the phone without the lock code if the phone is locked.
But there is a way to get around it thoughyou just need to do the key combination self reflashing to out of the box experience.
The 3 buttons rules will erase the lock code completely. And the 4 buttons on N97. But not so sure about the N900 because I have not tried flashing it.
