Just want to say thanks to everyone for the helpful posts. http://www.google.com/maps/m works with maemo-geolocation.
As everyone mentioned, with hover/cursor mode in the browser, I can pan around and zoom in by double tapping, but I cannot zoom out.
I opened that URL in my desktop browser to test, and I noticed that the typical + and -, and mouse scroll up/down does not zoom the maps in and out.
So what key shortcut/mouse action actually is required to zoom the maps in and out? Once that's figured out then we can find a way to pass that to the javascript or something.

Adding to the end of the URL #II=&z=desired_zoomstep allows you to specify a zoomlevel.
For example:
http://www.google.com/maps/m#II=&z=12
I don't know much javascript, but is this enough?

Might be better if you made the code savable so people can just run it off their tablet. I tried saving it to the the desktop and using it and when I try using a local file (after clicking a zoom level) the map will load in the zoom level area and not the main window.

For a "Mobile Hotspot" Joikuspot style app there are several initiatives in the works now in the Maemo Garage, but nothing that works 100% yet.
I did read that with some extras packages and a kernel modification you can broadcast a mobile hotspot at the command line, but it's without DHCP so you would have to manually configure the IP configuration on any hosts that connect.
Anyway, the progress is coming along nicely so I'm sure we'll have a full end user friendly solution soon.
