As a S60 v3 user, currently the Nokia N82, I have some questions before switching to the N900.

Firstly, is there a whitelist application, similar to that of Private Call and SMS Guard? I like to have certain numbers go to a separate inbox. If it's not available, is it possible to make on on the Maemo platform? Looking at Android apps, there doesn't seem to be anything available on that platform either.

I've used Linux now and then, but found myself unable to stick to it due too needing the Adobe suite and since moved to OSX, how alike is Maemo to desktop Linux? I'd like to "play" with Linux more so this phone could be brilliant for that!

And lastly, where is the best place to get it from? The Vodafone shop is ridiculous, being the most expensive. The Carphone Warehouse is cheaper, but I have been told to stay away in the past. I can't afford to pay out £500 upfront so if there is any better places than the Carphone Warehouse, shout up!

Cheers!

No whitelist application as yet. It may be possible to construct one.
(Edit: See this thread: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=34392 , for example)

Within the constraints of being a phone, the N900 is pretty much a full linux system, with some caveats. That's not to say the interface is like a desktop interface, it's not, as you can see from the many youtube vids showing the N900 UI, but it's a fairly unrestricted linux underneath that.

Cheers. Yeah, the interface doesn't bother me, obviously would need to be different for phone use, but as long as it's more or less desktop like underneith, thats all that matters!

Managed to have a play with one in the Carphone Warehouse, where the manager told me how it's not running the old Symbian OS, and is running Android. I nearly laughed at him! Another reason why I'm unsure about getting it from there.

Well, careful what you say, we have at least two self-claimed CPW sales people as members here ..

Seriously, I would take a good look around the information on offer here to see whether it's actually what you want.

As a phone pure and simple, there are serious limitations compared to what you might expect from a polished smartphone these days (not even per-contact ringtones, for a start). (You can make calls on it, though! ;-) ) If your focus is more on web browsing and tinkering, it might still be to your liking.

Of course you can tinker with Linux on a desktop system for the price of repartitioning or getting some extra storage..

It's probably not worthwhile to add more info - there's many threads here debating the merits or otherwise of the device for different uses. By far the best I've read (it really stands out like a jewel amidst the dross, imho, no offence intended to other N900 vs. Rest of World threads) is: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=39694 in which you'll find actual knowledgeable comments from CPW sales types..

Hello!
Ignoring the whitelist part as it has been discussed, i'm not a linuz user, and today i managed to connect to my work windows network through VPN, i vnc'd my work pc and used it really very easily! - was shocked and impressed!

Anyway - i'm learning linux, and finding the phone a gem! - powerful enough to do what you would on a pc, but with the community here i'm learning bit by bit. When you sift through the rants and whines, found on most forums, you find some great posts, walkthroughs and guides.

There is a lovely MobilePhonesDirect Rant - erm, i meant thread - do a search on here to find it

Apart from the crappy wait we all had, and ignoring some poor communication - i have been impressed with parts - and very happy with my Vodafone UK contract.

As good as the rest i'd say.

If the CPW can keep my number, then I may go with them, it's the best deal I've seen, and my 19-odd month old N82 is way out of shape.

I have been keeping an eye on the N900 for a few months now, no phone has taken my eye more than this one currently, apart from the Xperia X10, but having played with an iPod touch for a while, the physical keyboard is more or less a must as I don't enjoy touch screen keyboards as much, so I'm not as interested in it anymore.

I wish that my N82 had better internet facilities, I think I will be wanting a good browser, good enough so I don't need to use my computer, so the N900 is definitely the one in that department too.

A phone that I can be happy with for 24 months is a must. I'm incredibly bored of my N82 as it can't do anything interesting anymore. I imagine Maemo will have a much longer lifespan, heck, I might even write my own apps one day as I used to program!

Pretty sure its the right phone, just hope that a white list app can be created soonish.

I'll have a read of that thread you linked too.

The best contract deals I found were via via nokia direct (I think it may be out-sourced to MPC). Quick a bit cheaper than 'voda' (You really must ensure you get a data package). If you add up the "total cost" of the various deals they virtually all come out to the same (for a specific duration) - no surprise.

The best one-off charge I found was via www.quidco.com/nokia which is currently offering 10% + 20% off taking the price to 360, although there's a glitch at the mo which means it seems more like 390
