Sounds like installation of the becomeroot package hasn't worked successfully. The root account isn't locked by default, it's the same setup as on a 770 and the default root password is rootme. There is no user password which is why you shouldn't be prompted for a password when executing sudo gainroot as user - something hasn't gone to plan when you installed becomeroot.

OK, want to know what is the problem? I found it.
The N800 has problem in download files. I think the error message just means problems in installation, not exactly prompt for a password. Somehow I get by with dropbear. I am now booting from MMC2. I went to maemo.org and click the green install button, they would dl and stopped at 97% and not finish. Filemanager showed only 1k filelength. Tried several site, similar results. I get by dl files to desktop and BT file transfer to my N800. I remember seeing a thread like that before, dl would not dl and hanged at file length 1k. I am trying to find it now.....BTW, the N800 is gorgeos, I will report a little bit later, mine came with N800-1. Is this is different from N800? Control panel>About product>Nokia N800, 4.2007.26-8. Mine is buy.com $229.99, $90 more than my 770 I think I would gladly pay the difference if I ever touch a N800 before getting my 770. Dont get me wrong, the 770 is the most interesting/valuable tool I ever purchased. I am still working on the dl problem..........any suggestions, please?
Edit: The problem seems to be isolated with the dl page of simple launcher. I cannot reproduce the problem any more. And other sites dl seems to be fine now. Sorry for the cryiing wolf. I love my new toy.

Hey guys, I had the same exact problem with the the xterminal asking me for a password on my n900. I just uninstalled and re-installed "rootsh" on my device and i could "gainroot" after that.

Now do yourself a favor, change the password. Your current password is rootme, the whole world knows about it
do this
xterm
sudo gainroot
passwd # blank, do not type anything
enter new passwd # type your favorite password
re-enter new passwd # retype your favorite password
new password changed.
now you have your blank new shiny password, all to yourself. You need this new password to do SSH and things like that, like file transfer between N900 and winPC
