as far as i know this is a hardware issue. So i don't think you can use it on at&t 3g

I am curious about this as well. Could Nokia give us a firmware update for the GSM chip in the n900? I have read about GSM radios that have the ability to support other frequencies through a different firmware. I am on ATT and do not want to switch to T-Mobile because I have poor coverage. We need to know what GSM chip is in the n900 and then figure out whether or not we can update it. I hope someone will be able to figure this out!

Easy. Buy the cheapest AT&T 3G phone with Bluetooth DUN, and tether away.
(Need Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking daemon from the maemo.org repo)

lol, that is just wrong...using two phones. I too use to have AT&T but did not hesitate to switch over to tmobile as long as i can get my cost down.

actually a lot of the newer network chips can be programmed to work on different bands. I dont know if the N900 supports this, but it is possible to program some phones to work on different bands. But this probably cant be changed with firmwares or hacks, it goes deep inside the network chip itself

Even if it is a firmware mod away, it would probably require re-licensing by the FCC. Those frequencies are heavily regulated.

i believe it is going to be chip.
a friend and I are actually looking at taking a 3g (US) n95 and swapping the chips into an e90.
havent committed to it yet, because they are both expensive phones...but in theory, it should be ok.
