I came back to this this morning after not having any time yesterday. I have uninstalled everything and started again and am at the last step and it says

cannot create /home/user/.profile: permission denied.

I hardly understand anything that I am doing but I am enjoying having a go and appreciate everyone taking the time to help people out.

I have never used linux before or had any experience of it, so this is all really new to me.

But I thnk the boards are great and have found out so much about my n900 that there is no way I would have found anywhere else.

Cheers guys

I have gohan. And I seemed to get further until the very last at this point

echo 'alias iplayer="iplayer-dl -d /home/user/MyDocs/.videos"' >> /home/user/.profile

I will keep trying.

This is better than watching TV.

Jan - you have the patience of a saint - I'm not exaclty sure why you're bothering unless you find it as ammusing as I do.

gohan - your determination to cram your phone full of apps before their even out of development will be your undoing. Then again maybe I'm wrong and you're going to become a guru in matter of weeks. Either way I'll be watching your posts with baited breath.

If one of the ruby uninstalls fails then select the other one first. I had the problem you had so uninstalled the other one first and was then able to uninstall them both.

If you think installing two media players is "craming a phone" then wow....I've owned the n810 for over a year and recently sold it so I can buy the n900. I want my n900 to be setup simillar to the n810 and since I cannot view most of my video files with the default media player, this is why I downloaded two media players that I know and trust...Is this wrong?

I don't know what your problem is with me so please explain.

No worries cardiff, all was sorted thanks to Jan a few posts back. Like I said, I couldn't uninstall NEITHER Ruby without first removing iplayer.

That is correct.

You're doing the steps to keep the apps and libraries in sync, but as you're discovering it can be difficult. I did the same yesterday, installing about 20 things from extras-dev. For every one of these, I checked the dependency list--and didn't install 5 that I wanted as they remany libraries that looked likely to affect other applications.

Your success on the N810 was at least partly because the community wasn't quite as white-hot and eager as the N900 community is at the moment.

I've seen proxy servers cause this sort of problem with downloads before. Is there a proxy server between you and the Internet? It might even be a "transparent proxy" if you're on one of the ISPs that has a nanny-state approach to networking...

My ISP is Virgin Media (formally NTL) but I have no idea if there is a proxy between me and the Internet... how do I find out?

Some others are having this problem too.

Two media players at the same time is completely sensible. Having two (or more) from the extras-devel repository is a bit like riding a bicycle carrying torches so you can light the barbeque and fireworks more quickly when you get there before the people chose to walk.

You know, that sounds like fun. :-)

There's a bit of the admiration of the reckless, I think. You're still early in learning the command line, but you're diving in and fighting with some fairly tricky and non-obvious issues with packaging and libraries anyway. It like the time your 16 year old brother decides to fix the leaking gas tank on his very old car after puncturing it in a field, and doesn't think about flushing the gasoline fumes out. "I'll idle the car until then engine stops--the feed comes from the bottom so it will get all the liquid." The initiative and energy is good, but some pain is likely to result.

Having to reflash *is* a possibility from the experiementing you are doing. Luckily, having to "flash" is the probably the most painful it's likely to get, so keep on pushing. :-) (Note that 100% of config and data doesn't survive a flash, and never will...)
