what I would most love to see in the next coming release is just better network proxy support. N900's maemo5 has the worst network proxy support i have ever seen in an OS (from mac, to windows, to linux-kde and gnome- and even symbian) The device is an internet lemon if you are behind a proxy firewall and ony the browser and email works. Nothing and I mean not one internet aware application works. I live and work in a school where all internet connection is done via a proxy and its been a hellish experience using the N900 because of this problem. The worst part is even core system application which you would expect to work with the system wide proxy I added to my wireless profile doesnt work (the Nokia repo fails) and everyother core app like Internet radio, and sharing to flickr, facebook applet, IM non seems to be able to connect when you are behind a network proxy. The situation is just soo bad,

I mean imagine using the N900 and not being able to use IM,gpodder, mauku, witter,Qik,mastory,OMweather, zoutube,AP news applet, internet radio, gtalk, I mean just think of any application require an internet to connection to work, if you are behind a network proxy, be sure it wont work I can guarantee you that, This problem really needs to be fix and I hope the devs can look into it, On my e72, I never have any problem like this, every core application works and 90% of 3rd party apps so its a non issue really. Same on both my gnome and kde desktop linux setup, as long as i have setup my systemwide proxy settings, Things just works, I expect this same level of network integration on maemo but the reverse is the case.

It is a known issue too so if you are affected by this bug please help vote for it to be addressed and fixed. (You may not be affected today but one day you may find yourself in a place where the only way to access the web is to use a network proxy if that is the case and with the current state of the N900 then u are very much scr3wd

And if you intend on getting this device and your main means of internet connection is via a network proxy. My advise is just save your self the trouble and go for something else

I don't work behind a proxy, so can't try this but try setting the http_proxy environment variable from the terminal

export http_proxy=http://proxyaddress:theport

This will only work for applications started from that one terminal, though.

The OS supports it fine (well, ish); if you've got applications which don't support it raise specific bugs against those applications.

I'm not going to try and fix #3783 in Hermes (and neither can I), but I will try and do #7284 which is within the scope of my control.

well from a user point of view its hard to believe that everything is fine. i mean something is not right with maemo when it comes to network proxy. because like i said no one 3rd party application works with the system wide proxy. not one.. add to the fact that only 20% of core applications do. I have filed bugs again the major apps but core and 3rd party apps (gpodder, media player,IM gtalk, mauku, mastory etc) this issues is huge and just about every 3rd party app is affected. It may be that developers dont write their apps to make use of the systems proxy settings. what puzzles me is why is the situation very different on symbain and gnome and kde. i mean just about every internet aware 3rd party app works fine with the system proxy settings and every core app works.. its just not a problem at all. same on my kubuntu laptop i gpodder works there fine same as every internet awared app on kde. same thing on windows.. why is the situation different with maemo.. really if maemo is ever gotten be taken seriously as more than an OS for enthusiant and geeks. It needs to fix this issue. right now i can export my httproxy to /etc/profile and this solves 55% of the issue but this is not how it should be. i doesnt have to be fidding with vi and rebooting my system everytime i want to move from wireless to 3g. I really hope this is addressed even if not in the life time of maemo5

There's even copy/paste code available for how to retrieve the proxy settings from the system, so it's just application developers being lazy or just not aware of proxies.

IF you try to connect to skype and google talk, behind a proxy lan, it won't work also. Just as the guy said, only works browser and mail.

so guys vote for that bug to be fixed.

proxies are pretty obviously a very neglected part of maemo5 just look at the horrible UI in Settings>Internet connections>Connections>Edit>Next(3)>Advanced

That hasnt even been optimized for touch yet. Still got a crappy "stylus" scroller.

You're right, this is a serious issue for anyone hoping to run from a variety of WiFi networks. In the drive to 3G usability this way of using the device isn't being handled well.
