590.

Last time Steve Jobs publicly boasted about his ***** length, he claimed there were 140,000 apps in the AppStore library.... which makes the fart apps 0.42% of the total library.

So, I say that for any platform to be taken seriously, they have to keep the # of fart apps well below 0.42% of their total apps.

You forgot about all the Puking Apps and Pooping Apps and All the other useless stuff people have put together to try to get 99 cents out of your Bank Account . . .

Oh and how could I forget the Flick-A-Booger App

Dont get me wrong they are plenty of REALLY Good iPhone Apps out their .... Tweet Deck comes to mind . . .

But 100,000 - I doubt more than a hundred that you personally would find useful

Im anxious to see someone port a newer version of OSX say 10.5 and then try and use the BOOT CAMP program to load Windows XP,

Yes it will be useless, and slow, and take a week to boot, but that ain't the point, I thought the main draw of emulation was to see what your hardware could do that it was'nt designed to do.

So, yes, the N900 running iPhone apps would be a massive boon, for me I'd use it just to run Starmap which is the one and only programs I miss from my 3GS - yes Stellarium is in the works, but Starmap was such a perfect program to use on a small screen..

While I understand the statements that developers should devote their time to making better maemo programs rather than emulation ones, but from what I can see, not much is being developed for maemo, unless im reading the wrong websites..

For the number of apps, this about sums it up: http://www.theappsmachine.com/iphone...the-app-store/

As for emulating the iPhone on N900, it would be too tedious to do as Apple keeps everything as closed as possible. Tho, you wouldn't really need to emulate it - you would just need to redirect iPhone OS API calls to the native Maemo ones, considering that both are running on virtually the same hardware. Something like WINE does for Windows apps.

Yes, those 'specialized' apps make up a certain % of their apps library; but I don't think there's restriction against such design on other platforms. Including Maemo.

Moreover, I think widget-like apps have their place in a mobile platform due to a few reasons:

- technical limitation (screen estate, ui elements, processing power, bandwidth, etc)
- mobile usage (people using it not while sitting down with a full keyboard and lots of time)

I wouldn't be surprised if a certain elements we see in iPhone's ecosystem that are shunned at this point are emulated in some ways in Ovi/Maemo's future. It won't be the first time either.

I was just thinking, the Nokia n900 can run OSX even though slowly it can still run, now the iPlop is running an ARM chip same as the n900 so with that in mind and OSX working on it would it safe to say that there could be away to actually make a little emulator like Wine for the n900 that iPhone apps could be used on the n900? or even just the iPhone OS itself to test?

This all on a whim but theoretically it should be possible no? I just thought it would be funny Apple going on about all their apps and then n900 comes along and says we have all your apps and millions more!! in your face Apple.

I asked a similar question about andriod apps as those handsets are now all virtually identicle hardware-wise to the n900:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=42945

Answer = it's more complicated than it sounds.

I would "LOVE" the ability to run iPhone apps, if for nothing else than to have access to:

- My Slingbox, via slingmobile, since web access is not possible
- My Vonage account, via Vonage app
- My XM Radio account, since web access is not possible

...given that there will most likely "never" be Maemo 5 support for said apps.

C'mon... be consistent. Earlier you said:

Which is it? And before you go into a semantic laden battle of I said this, but not this... condemning one is condemning the other. If you hate the jelly, you also throw away the jar. And besides, it doesn't bother me. I'm having fun with you anyway.

So no worries. Just stick to your guns. As far as the 12:
Where - locates QUICKLY cheapest gas, local weather, coffee shops, location aware app
Twitterriffic - Witter, Mauku are both lacking user experience/UI
Tilt Shift Gen - basically an image editor, would be great matched up with a quality 5mp camera (take the hint Nokia)
Snapture - just goes to show that Apple doesn't do it all well, Snapture is what the Photo app should have been
Pocket Google Analytics - screw logging in each time via browser, supports multiple accounts, one finger can drive this app
Epicurious - I cook, love new ideas, quickly like the access
Bento - I like being organized, with full access to my contacts, copy/paste and scheduling
textPlus - Free text messaging, also on Android; not on Maemo
AS3 Reference - I'm a Flash/Flex dev and the website for Adobe docs is sloooow sometimes, this helps me avoid that
Bing - Hate on Microsoft all you want, their search app is what great UX/UI is all about - and it works darn well
CNN - Video, local news, world news, easier to navigate than their site (which needs fixing in a few places)
Touchgrind - multiple touch skateboarding app - can't be done (2 feet on skateboard, 2 fingers used in game) on the N900
Air Sharing - Screw slow bluetooth sharing, screw having to carry around a cable... wifi transfer of files, self-hosted WebDAV solution that's easy to use - surprised nobody has recreated this one on the N900
That's my 12. The rest, not important. Not one fart app has ever landed onto my iPhone - I can go to Taco Bell for that.

Most can be duplicated via websites, but having multiple logins for Gmail, Google Analytics, Google Voice, et al means that I'm typing in login information a lot. That slows down how fast I can get out of my browser - which is a better browser than Mobile Safari. The apps emulate what you do in a browser on the iPhone because honestly... the browse plain sucks. Not a problem on the N900, but sometimes you just want to see something, close out. Not browse the web.

Some are location aware apps are nigh-instant on their lock. My time with the N900... especially one that's been locked onto some 150 miles away, the lock was slower than just a quick "pop-in, pop-off" type of usage. If I were driving, looking for the cheapest gas and it takes 2 minutes to lock, at 60mph, that's 2 miles and in some cases, 2 or more exits on the highway before I can START to make up my mind. My latter locks on the N900 were under a minute. I can lock my location on my iPhone usually in 15 seconds. I'm sure that will improve on the N900 in due time.

I mentioned one multi-touch game - why? Because the N900 can't emulate real-life situations where two fingers would correspond to what you'd do in real life. Touch screen is fine and dandy everywhere else as single-touch, but not when you might require it - say... emulating two legs. It's not a compelling reason for multi-touch, but it does show that it has it (albeit limited) uses.

Air Sharing - seriously. I cannot believe that one doesn't exist yet.

Oh well... back to emulation </thread hijack>
