I have Gmail set up using IMAP and my settings are to update automatically using any connection every 10 minutes (for testing purposes). I checked back 20 minutes later and the last refresh date was still the previous time I checked my mail. People keep saying the email app sucks but I assume it would do basic things like this?

I use nokia messaging (far lower battery drain, instant push email) for gmail and another imap email account - works far better then polling. Try that and see how you like it.
