I have had arguments and arguments and arguments with nokia over this when my n95 used to constantly fell apart. they kept telling me nokia will never give a brand new phone off the assembly line ever. they use refurbished external parts, which is most likely your old phone, BUT do give you a brand new circuit board. they dont usually change design that quick also. nokia call this practice replacement units. very strange as i can name one company that replaced my music player (cough apple) in three days with a brand new one. if you get a new phone i will be very amazed as i have never experienced that.

One question for you guys. just for future reference. can someone let me know how the usb part that comes out of the device is attached??? is it soldered or and extension of something else?

I think this will answer your question but am not sure.

The USB port is surface mounted to the edge of the phones mother board using solder.

this board is then positioned such that the port aligns with the hole in the case.

In my device the port was always a little behind the hole. I have seen a few pics where the socket is slightly futher forward. No indication as to if this effects the chances of a divice having "USB seperation issues" or not.

You are correct - the European Limited Warranty is 24 months for mobile devices (12 months for accessories). Unless it's a DDP device of course, in which case it's 1 week (or was it 2 weeks?)

Even those DDP devices should be repaired under the Consumer Protection Act - I hope I'm not the one that has to prove it.

umm what. who designed that??? lol omg (slams head on table). this means the usb port issue WILL happen to everyone. if i have my n900 plugged in and accident tally stepped on the usb cable to jolt the phone it will cause fractures in the solders. the port has half a mm to move around.

bad bad bad bad. the spacing in between the port and the device should not be there if they are going to use that method of attaching the port to the internal board. im going to fill the gaps in tomorrow.

the day i got my n900 i thought that in my head that i hope nokia have a claw grip from the usb to the board or that will break since there is gaps all around the port.

Now how Nokia is handling stuff so far, not the same. Cisco would do SW updates on an almost daily basis. Also, I never had any dodgy HW with respect to Engineering like this USB port obviously is.

I used to buy Millions of $$$ worth of Cisco gear a year and they send out refurb'd gear to replace BRAND new gear that arrives DOA. I'm talking 6 figure costing gear here. So NOKIA is not doing anything unusual. All Cisco's RMA gear is refurb'd as well. I had about 100 Routers that cost around a Mil a piece and that's what they do with their operation. I also never had any issues with their refurb'd gear.

In fact refurbished equipment gets more attention than new merchandise. QA personnel don't usually inspect every new manufactured device (they use sampling), but typically every refurbed product is rigorously tested. I buy a LOT of refurb stuff and have no more issues than anyone buying new... maybe fewer.

I had to send my N900 up for repair. (usb port came out) The nokia repair center received it on the 26th of Feb and my replacement was shipped 2nd of Mar. No questions asked. According to the nokia care representative they will not send me refurbished device and i will be getting a brand new one. Just thought id put that out there if it helps anyone.
