I have had my n900 since the start of december and have had it brick on me whilst I was away on holiday over christmas and new year.

Then i come back to the UK and get it back working, after i flashed it, but it has a terrible fault that sometimes when i open the keyboard it just switches itself off.

I sent it to Nokia for repair and after a week it came back with a nice 'refurbished' label on the screen, i plugged the sim and battery in and turned it on. So good, so far so i opened up the keyboard and whoomp there it is, switched OFF.

So it went back to Nokia support again and then 2 weeks later it reappears and still when i open the keyboard it switches itself off. It didnt do this immeadiatley but it happens often enough to be a massive pain.

Has anyone else suffered from this irritating problem, that is the shutting down of their device when they open the keyboard and not the uselessness of Nokia support (that is probably a big seperate thread of its own).

Interesting. So it's not rebooting, but switching off? Any chance to provide a syslog of that?

I had this problem, mine would turn off when opening the keyboard, I tried everything, I re flashed the firmware,no joy, flashed the eMMC (several times), no joy, was about to throw myself at the mercy of Nokia support when the battery ran out.
I changed batteries and not a problem since, apart from when i put the battery I had been using originally back in when it shut down first time I opened the keyboard. That one has now been binned

OK, thanks I will borrow a colleagues battery and see what happens, this could also be the reason why it always passes the checks when it is with Nokia and fails when it is with me.

That is a real good point - I guess you had it at the service without your battery, right?
Maybe one of the contacts of the battery is a little too wide, so it will disconnect from the pin on the N900 because of the vibration when the slider locks in the upmost position - interesting. Please keep us posted

Best regards,
Corwin

I don't think this is an issue or something. My keyboard shuts down too when I slide the screen, but that happens when there is enough light outside.
The N900 comes with a light sensor, right? So when there is enough light outside or in the room, the backlight keyboard shuts down in order to preserve battery.
Do you have problems when it's dark in the room?

I'm a bit late on this, but I saw one with this exact problem, it was a loose battery. This has also been spotted on several N97s I've seen, I think that's mostly why Nokia changed the battery pin type from N97 to the next models.

I went into town and just purchased a cheap battery from a mobile phone stall, put it in the device and then started a little game of how many times i can open and shut the keyboard before it shuts down. I gave it up in the end becuase it just would switch off.
Brilliant result, then Nokia Support called me and i explained that this seems to be the problem and they promised to send me a new battery tomorrow. A good result all round and this has possibly restored my faith in Nokia. It also meant that i could shut up my colleague who has an iphone explaining to him that it was easy for me to fix the problem by just buying a new battery.

Thanks everyone above. I have this problem. I've wedged the battery with a piece of paper. Seems to work so far.

I got my N900 second-hand and don't have the proof of purchase for the UK warranty.
