Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone noticed any REAL big differences between T-Mobile's 3G service vs 2G service.
For example:
-Clarity of phone calls
-Noticeable faster internet processing speed?
-Better service reception?

The problem is I heard that 3G connection on the N900 really takes a chunk out of batteries in general? Can anyone please advise if they noticed any of these differences?

i'm not on t-mobile, but a few general points
- connection to either shouldn't affect call quality UNLESS the 3g coverage in the area is bad, and the phone switches to 2g in mid call, case in which you might get a disconnect or interruptions
- if it offers 2.5G (GPRS), which works when connecting to 2G, then it's not such a big difference between 3G and 2G realistically, unless we're talking large amounts of data. for surfing wouldn't matter too much unless you watch video streams
- indeed i get better battery life when connected to 2G instead of 3G. i have installed a small app that resides in the status menu and that allows me to quickly change to 3G if i need faster speeds, and then turn back to 2G when i'm done
- the biggest downside for 2G is that a data connection is suspended when taking a call, but is resumed afterwards. so you wouldn't be able to check email/surf during a call, if you need to do that

Wont affect phone calls; they go over 2G. Note, with 2G, the data connection is paused while phone calls are in progress

Ping times might be similar, download speeds are certainly faster on 3G

3G typically gives worse reception which may be a reason for the apparent higher power consumption; the phone has to ramp up the transmit power to be able to contact the cell tower

Thanks for your input! What program do you use to switch to 2g/3G?

With the 3G service, I get download speed of roughly 1Mbps, while EDGE (2.5G) can only provide download speed of approx. 250kbps. There's is significant and noticeable different when browsing the web.

It's called 3G/2G/Dual mode. you can find it in the apphandler. i would also recommend WiFi Switcher to turn off Wifi while not used. Also a battery saver.

I think 3g has newer/better voice codecs.. but it's so highly operator dependant anyway, they might just turn down bitrate until it's as bad as 2g..

Not for me, I'm unable to receave calls while connected to the internet over 2G. I also read about other users having that problem.

Sorry all, I forgot to mention that I am using T-Mobile USA, and I recieve calls fine if im on the internet... So 3G is good for surfing overall, but voice operators dont support 3G often enough to make a difference in voice clarity?

I agree. On Vodaphone UK I noticed a big improvement in call quality once on 3G. When I was on 2G calls were sometimes a little less crisp and quieter.
