Hello guys,

I was really excited to get a N900 but I am a little disappointed by the latest reviews and opinions...
During my research I found that HTC HD2 could be a great competitor (for my personal user profile - I'm no linux geek - please no flames here).

But I have 2 quick questions, wondering if someone has tested both gadgets already:

1) What does "N900 full Skype integration" means? I mean, I can install Skype at HD2, so which skype function will be missed compared to N900? I really don't care about having skype contacts appearing over my phone contact list, as long as I can check my skype contact list apart and use the same features compared to N900.

2) Same question above applies to browsing experience... according to reviews, N900 masters the browsing experience... but HD2 has bigger screeen, better resolution, Flash and multi-touch support - so what's the big advantage of N900?

Thank you very much for any help on these questions.

PS: Battery life matters a lot to me and I don't care if HD2 will be upgradable to WinMo7.

afaik, the hd2 does flash 9.x just like the n900. correct me if i'm wrong.
in the end it comes down to your personal preference - large capacitive screen versus hardware-keyboard.
both of them are great products, its just about what you value more.

to me the hd2 is WAY too big. i would even say its really uncomfortable to hold in your hand compared to the n900.
i cant say anything to the hd2's battery life, though...

regarding skype: on the n900, skype is fully integrated, down to the OS and contact list. within maemo, you setup your skype-account and add skype-information to your contacts. and you can directly call someone over skype without using a specific standalone-skype-client.

As long as you have no problem with having two phone applications which could receive two different calls simultaneously from two systems - you are OK with a separate skype.

The same is with contact list.

Full browsing means a full support like Firefox or Mozilla. It includes Flash, no minimizing web pages, moving TIFF, JS etc. So far it is the only phone which is able to browse complex web pages and show it in suitable way.

BTW, resolutions are the same on both - 480 X 800. And N900 has a keyboard.

One thig that N900 would win is HTC HD2 using WinMO OS. I HATE WinMO OS though. I have PDA and it was quite feel like a pc style. Too much graphic but not much usage. For I am going with Open Linux anytime!

In accordance with GSM Arena review - http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_htd2-review-418.php

"Dodgy web Flash support"

... and it looks like it is only in IE but not in Opera.

I am actually in the same process of comparison right now...

The HD2 is a more mature device with more apps and and more complete, albeit annoying, operating system. I already have an N900, coming from (gulp) an N97.

HTC did wonders with its SENSE interface for the UI. Still, certain parts of the OS are not finger-friendly and were designed for a Stylus, which you cannot of course use with this phone. Anyway, two things made kill my decision to get the phone, other than spending too much cash on going from N97 to N900 then HD2!:

1- Camera on the HTC is horrendous! Images are fuzzy, and quite frankly look like a VGA camera. Whereas the camera on the N900 lacks the colour warmth of the N97 and the N95 8GB (the master of all phones) [probably because the N900 uses a warmer palette for the screen display, so images are perhaps taken less warmly so that they look right on the display?]
2- No confirmed update to Windows Mobile 7 until now (Meego anyone *sigh*), and the HD3 is to be released in November, effectively killing the HD2 to a certain extent. I dont wanna get a phone to keep changing.

My advice is: wait 1-3 more months, or get something running Android. Sad to say: Nokia is horrible in maintaining its OSs, and is keeping everyone in the dark about Meego and Maemo. Android is a more mature OS with tons of apps, and it is also Linux-based, allowing a degree of hacking for the hacking-interested.

Can't find my N900 stylus for the past 2 hours!

Isn't the HD2 running a dead-end OS? WinMo6.5 is NOT compatible with Windows Phone 7, and WP7 upgrades are highly unlikely for old HTC Phones (where "old" for HTC means anything that has shipped.)

Otherwise, I would pick the n900 over the HTC for build quality (even with the detaching USB plug) and I would pick Maemo5 over WinMo 6.5 for dead-end OS.

If you're considering a different phone, go with something other then WinMo 6.5.

I got the hd2 from the day it came out here, and very nice phone. But in the end you find yourself fixing with new Roms very mutch and from start it is many things that is "buggy" on it. but with a good Rom it do great tho..
Did get my n900 few days ago and the hd2 sleep well in a box atm. as did read many told that n900 was big and heavy, compare to the hd2 it feels so light and fast. But maybe just me that like the n900 from start to mutch tho
Andriod i should say is worth more looking into if you should compare some other phone to n900, did not like Hero had it for few days then i got hd2, but was waiting on Desire. And now when just weeks till it comes out here i not even sure i want it anymore when i got my n900.
But like everything, all is upp to what you wana do with your device i guess tho and this was just my thoughts.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the fantastic (and fast!) feedback... lots of useful tips here!

egoshin: you're right about the hd2 resolution... too many reviews in my head... I've read the full review... but was wondering which kinda site will have the complexity beyond hd2 browsing power... doesn't hd2 support JS and etc?

maxximuscool: check this out (GSM Arena review): "PocketPC regulars are certainly familiar with the TouchFLO interface. With the HD2 however, HTC have decided to go to the next level and upgrade the old but still cool TouchFLO 3D with all heart-melting features found in the Sense UI pioneered on the HTC Hero. The result is a new Sense user interface resembling the tabbed TouchFLO with more content and full of eye-candy.(...)"

BN900: best comment indeed. Although I really don't care about the camera (image samples at GSM Arena are ok for me), the launching of HD3 made me worried because the possible lack of support for the gadget... it looks like you're in that path for a longer time... do you suggest any hd2/N900 similar phone model that is Android-based?

msa: lived in Bremerhaven for 5 months at late 2008... nice and peaceful city indeed!

PS: where the heck I can thank the posts?
