You are right, the about dialog shows that my license expires 2010-05-11. Damn! Should have noticed this before.
Dear customer,
thank you for contacting our support. As you have a Navicore license it should be perpetual. However please note that user's who had purchased a Wayfinder Navigator for Internet Tablets license have on a time based license. These licenses will expire. I have however extended your license so that it will not expire.

Today I received the answer I was waiting for, as said before in this thread the licenses for Navicore are perpetual, so if you bought the navigation kit for N800 (like I did) or a license for Navicore personal 2007 you can contact Wayfinder and ask them to extend the license expiry date. The licenses bought for the built in map application in OS2008 (Wayfinder navigator) are limited to three years.
Thank you all for this really useful thread.
Thank you for contacting us!
Unfortunately as Wayfinder shut down so there are no more subscriptions
offered.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Best Regards,

Openstreetmap has fairly decent coverage in this area, and I am already mapping the residential area where I live using OSM2GO for upload to OSM.
Aside from that I installed Navit from the maemo.org downlaods page this afternoon, and used the instructions on the Navit 770/800/810 page to copy and configure the XML files, and downloaded the OSM maps for it. Got it going really quickly and painlessly
got to say that I am fairly impressed with it. The app has some rough edges, especially around the menus, and POI searching is not easy, but it is very useable. Only other gripe is that I have not managed to make it use miles instead of kilometres as the distance unit, and my fervent googling seems to indicate that Navit only supports Kms at this time, although I hope someone will prove me wrong.
