No Flandry noooooo.............

We need to get this emulator up to a reasonable speed on a good selection of various game types i mean some of the driving games still suffer(chase hq, outrun, continental circus, road blasters, super hang-on) and space harrier and afterburner 1+2 still suffer bad too.

platform games are fine apart from the odd stutter now and again and a fair few horizontal and vertical scrollers suffer like salamander, galaga, even galaxians and phoenix suffer.

Our other interests are only temporary to help those coders push their emulators in the right direction. my interest in mame will always remain.

IF i could code i would help out but i dont have the time or knowledge to do so, so i will help out testing and helping out others who struggle so you can concentrate on the important things like porting our favourite emulators.

I and everyone else who benefit from these emulators appreciate all the hard work you put into these projects.

Don't give up on mame.

LOL i'm not giving up on it, i'm just trying to allocate limited resources in the best way, and saying that GLES support may not be part of this port. I will continue to push new versions to the builder, thus making all the work that goes in upstream available. That's the central idea behind porting the modern version. Our task here on this end is to identify the most pressing and specific problems with the Maemo port and fix them to make the upstream version translate to an equally good experience here. As i don't even have MAME installed on a PC, nor time/interest in playing arcade games except sporadically to test MAME, i need feedback of the kind that users can give.

For example, for the games that run slow here, are they also slow(er) on the PC compared to another game? If not, there might be something specifically wrong with the port that's not a problem with the upstream project. On the other hand, if a game doesn't work well on a PC or N900, it would be good to know that so i don't waste time trying to figure out the problem. Matching up poorly functioning games as being all of the same system is helpful to know which machines are problematic. Anyway, that's the situation. Ya'll are my eyes and ears, and i can only see and hear what you tell me. I'm interested in fixing things that are broken if they are in demand, but may not be adding new features as that was never the plan for MAME.

Well i've said more than enough on the subject. I rotate between projects because this is a hobby, and if a hobby is not fun it's rather pointless. My interest in spending time on a project is determined by how creative/interesting the solution will be, how much of a perceived need exists, and how much support i get on the parts of the project that i can't/won't spend time on.

I've got a lot on my plate and won't be working on this for a while, it's just come up because of the recent proliferation of emulator threads and the noisy, illiterate, and indiscrete kids that has brought to the forum, which is demanding too much time in moderation and making me take another look at what i'm trying to accomplish here with yet another emulator.

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?
MAME: an arcade in your pocket
Accelemymote: make your accelerometer more joy-ful

All games which i mentioned above work great on the pc version.

I will add to this post later with a selection of games which struggle on the pc version and the n900 version (if there are any) i will limit it to early1980 to early 1990 games.

Thanks again for your time on this.

Here's something interesting. Since i'm just sitting at a computer writing i plugged in my phone and set up an automated testing script and tried it out to compare various versions and compiler flags. Being able to test what improves the performance, and by how much, is going to be important going forward.

Here are the results in percentage full speed (three one-minute tests for each data point, averaged unless one was an outlier):
Code:
              sharrier gauntlet aburner2
0.135-o2 71.3
0.135-o3 51.6 70.5 32.7
0.137-o3 56.5 74.3
0.137-o2-arm 57.9 73.0 36.1
0.137-o3-arm 58.7 75.7 38.0
The perceived speedup going from 0.135 to 0.137 is indeed a reality (about 10% improvement), which is good news. I attributed it to the switch to C++ compiler above, but there's really no way of knowing.

As a reference, gauntlet was running at between 60-65% with version 0.135 before PR1.1 came along.

Definitely got a ways to go with these.

FYI i also ran with the -nosound option, but the results were not significantly different, as expected.

I made a small change to the startup script already, so combined with the slight bump in speed from using arm-specific compiler flags it seemed worth an update. The autobuilder is chewing on it right now. Edit: and it's ready.

Edit: I forgot to mention that i dropped back to -o2 level to see if that would solve the problem with galaga88. No such luck. I've added a specific todo/roadmap list to the first post to keep track of what's up next.

Anyone tried mame with overclocking???

Flandry, startup sound volume is back being high again.

Oh and there is a 3-5% speed increase on the more taxing games

space harrier,afterburner.outrun etc

Does someone has succefully launched Metal Slug serie with MAME ?
I get always the message "The selscted game is missing one or more requiered ROM or CHD images. Please select a different game."
I have tried differents Metal Slug roms and differents neogeo.zip BIOS but still no luck

I will look into it for you shortly just changing a nappy..

EDIT:

2 hours later

BOY THAT WAS ONE BIG NAPPY .lol

Ok tried metal slug and metal slug 4 both worked fine

metal slug - 55% speed a little jerky
metal slug 4 - 55 - 61% speed again a little jerky.

To get them to work:-

Unzip a metal slug rom and unzip neogeo bios into the same place then make one new zip file with both sets of unzipped files in and make sure you name the new zip the same name as the original game zip file.

Flandry,

Thanks for the update! The one issue seems to be the accelerometer is on and makes menu picking hard, since the highlighted options keep scrolling. Seems to also happen in some games like Gunforce 2.

Either the accelerometer is active or something else with inputs os going on. Any ideas to fix is appreciated!

lol, at first I did not take your directions literally and was looking for a "flip" option

Thanks!

The 800mhz OC makes games like In the Hunt, smoother
