Yesterday I was in the garden with my N800 far away from my router and had quite bad connectivity (just one bar). I noticed that browsing was not very pleasant. Then I started to play with the "sleep timeout" value and could improve the whole situation when I set it to 1000.

But then I noticed my wlan power on the N800 was just 10mW. I set it to 100mW and removed the sleep-timeout back to the default and everything worked fine again despite the rather weak wifi signal.

Result: The sleep timeout may help in certain situations, but first make sure that your wifi power is 100mW.

There is a comment in bugzilla which provides some background to the transmit power setting and suggests 100mW should be the default unless legislation in your country prohibits it. The higher transmission power setting apparently has negligible effect on battery lifetime, which is good.

Well I changed my settings all the way up to 500 and still could not connect with my normal WIFI connection spots prior to the upgrade. It shows that it is 'connecting' but just looks like it is stuck in a loop even when there is even three green bars??? I am considering installing old firmware, this is very frustrating.

ebunny - you may be suffering from a different problem detailed in bug #1653. No solution for this bug yet, other than going back to the previous 3.2007.10-7 firmware.

Just to note, for me to make it work I had to go first in offline mode.
In all other cases it was simply not applying/keeping the change.
could someone please help me with this. Where do I download Xterm? I am on a windows machine. Does that have anything to do with it? I have fon wireless device for my wifi. This firmware update is terrible. My device is useless.

Open the following page _on your device_ then click the green arrow:

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/osso-xterm-advanced

If xterm fails to install due to a flakey network, follow the "Status" bar app instructions from comment #47 onwards in this thread.

An update from my end. I was browsing on the FON forums and found the following comments on http://boards.fon.com/viewtopic.php?t=3451

You need to turn of the DUAL SSID feature of the La Fonera.
By default FON doesn't let you do this...
I believe you can make the MyPlace go away with the Francofon addon which is explained on the french forums of fon.

Every X seconds La Fonera broadcasts one of both signals and in "energy saving" mode your tablet pc thinks it's going down and disconnects
i installed Francofon and made my private SSID hidden. I could then go back from a timeout value of 1000 to 500 and my connection is still working fine.

Ton.

I just had this problem with the new os2008 (official).
apt-get update was hanging all the time. I've just blew away a couple of hours trying to find a solution.

Connection -> edit -> next ... -> powersave = moderate

Hope this helps

Well, you have to understand that the repositories are also being completely hammered.
