Yes. there is an option to have the app launch automatically when you hold the phone upright. but it's slow and sometimes if you don't do it right, the phone wont launch at all. the lack of frontal buttons is not helping either.

I understand the possibility of a global portrait mode is not strong for Maemo 5. it seems to be a Maemo 6 planned feature.

And we cannot claim we didn't see this coming. The N900 Logo IS PRINTED on the phone in Landscape after all.

But how about a compromise?

We just need the following things to be Portrait. That's all. atleast for me.
1. Menu for launching stuff.
2. SMS/Conversations
3. Email
4. On-Screen Portrait Keyboard.
5. Browser

Just give me those 5.
Using the Braek glitch, the browser works just fine in Portrait. so we're like almost there.
I agree to this. But I prefer 2, 4 and 5 to get prioritized...

Even if we have already thought this as an Internet tablet, its main objective, it would be more powerful if it will allow you having your phone be usable in portrait mode, same as at its landscape orientation. That will be a major revision, but that won't hurt since it is a tablet pc and a phone utilizing one of the powerful processors for its size.

With respect, I don't buy into this 'It's an Internet Tablet' philosophy - do we all carry an N900 in one pocket and a phone in the other - I don't think so...

We don't need to make too many excuses for this PHONE as it is.

Most interaction (i.e. physical input/screentaps) is easier in Landscape. I ran a lowly 6210 Navigator last year - allways browsed in landscape and longed for a landscape querty. A lot of phones are going landscape because of the advantages this format offers - they are not all 'Internet Tablets'

Courtesy of 'Shortcutd' I can access the phone app with one long push on the camera button. What I could do with from that point on is for the Dialling Pad to open (as opposed to the Phone app main screen).

If there was a 'search contacts' button on the Dialling Pad and the alphanumeric function was functional I could search for contacts by name. Not a big ask, I hope?

Yes, you can do that in landscape via the slide-out keypad, but that requires two hands and there are occasions when I need to work one-handed - and that dictates portait.

Ok. Not Internet Tablet. What about Social Networking phone?

Looking at the series of models released by Samsung, and now by Nokia and Microsoft Kin, they are intended to interact with people through social networking sites and be able to send updates (be it long or short statements) that will require physical (or virtual) keyboard.

Now, and I believe, it always come to the point in all of us that you're kinda tired and sleepy to use a phone with your 2 hands. Here goes the one-hand operation to save your remaining tasks.

Remind you, this is why N900 sprouted from its elderlies (N810 etc) as smaller brother to come in handy build feature (because of its Phone features) and allow you to do several important features in portrait mode.

Why does microB browser has portrait mode? Why is Firefox's upcoming update will also support portrait mode? Maybe because N900 fits the hand right for portrait orientation too.

I agree - I think the N900 was ahead of it's time at launch and remains so.

Without doubt, there are times when Portrait/single-handed use is preferrable. Indeed, I frequently browse the net and read docs in portrait.

N900 as a Social Networking Phone?

I think this forum is crowded enough with phone-using proletariat (myself included) - can you imagine the pandemonium if we allowed the kids in?

I for one don't think this forum would benefit from Vicky Pollard's postings !

I'm sorry, saying you can use the phone in portrait because you can use two hands two use the keyboard and it is faster makes no sense at all.

i agree with portait mode in browser/rss reader/conversations/email. but then just mainly for reading stuff not for typing/replying.

i had a phone for 2 years before the N900 thats the E90 and that phone also has both views and yes i could us the front screen and numpad to reply for example to an sms. Did i do that in those 2 years? i think i can count that one 1 hand.

i always when i started typing switched to landscape and the real keyboard. that is so much faster.

So what i hope first is that portrait mode is brougth to us purely for reading stuff. then we can ook further.

Don't think I said that...

LANDSCAPE is faster for me to TYPE in 'cause I can use two digits instead of one. Landscape can be more convenient to VIEW/READ/BROWSE if I'm walking about, holding a pint or driving (only joking).

The screen seems more logical to me in LANDSCAPE - just like a PC monitor or TV you get a more panoramic view, but opinions will vary.

The point is, with the N900 you have the option on the phone application, MicroB browser (and now on Firefox as well, I believe) to use either mode, but text input can only be via LANDSCAPE.

I maintain text input is easier with two thumbs on a hard keyboard, but that's just my opinion.

The only ways you could input (type) in PORTRAIT would be via an on-screen keypad (which would take up too much space when browsing) via a portrait-sliding phone (where the keys tend to be too small if it's a qwerty) or via a device like an E72 or Blackberry with a hard-button qwerty.

These are the obvious points to consider when buying a phone and I have no regrets whatsoever!

Yup. That's true speed typing on the qwerty keyboard.

Why not include also portrait keypad for replying "OK" or "Yes". That could be sweet!

I remember there were virtual keypad applications for Symbian s60 5th both for portrait and landscape. It makes life flexible and convenient a bit..

First I must say Im very sorry if this is already known for reposting it but here it goes!

First download that software braek, its a simple software that produces a crack looking thingy to the screen.

Now make a shortcut to the desktop for braek, then make a shortcut for the phone and the X-terminal on the left side of the screen.

Now open braek and start quickly tapping the area where the phone shortcut lies. Now the phone opens. Close phone software normally and N900 is locked to portrait... you can use Xterminal to kill braek by typing
killall braek

Tada forced portrait and works always for me. Some software dont like it though. You can open and close the keyboard as you wish and its locked in portrait.

To get it back to landscape without restarting phone just open the phone software and close it normally and it goes to portrait.
