Nokia are in the wrong for not making a statement at all regarding this so called leaked fw to the fact it is illegal or not.
Bit late to talk when the horse has alreadty bolted from the stable dont you think?.
It's illegal. and link is link - until you don't post it. it's like to say "I don't grow weed or make coke, i just sell it"

Funny thing is, that portrait mode in conversations is pretty much all the portrait I would ever need in N900. And all they have have to do is add a menu option to turn it on permanently and add a simple portrait keyborad(which already exists in phone app).

And yet, its highly unlikely that will ever happen. Thanks Nokia

This phone should switch its mode from landscape to portrait. so the landscape mode will be the alternative option for the users.

and it's because what - just because you said this. i think this phone a t first place was made for landscape and also it's the reason people liked it - this and keyboard. and yes it would be nice to have a choice. but again if you would make mainly mode portrait - you need to loose keyboard and at all to make different phone =)

You're right, N900 is and must be mainly landscape. But daily use needs at many times portrait.
And not a perfect portrait is needed, I mean, if desktop icons are rotated, square widgets are rotated, and not-square ones are maintained, that could be PERFECTLY USEFULL! , you must "turn your head" to read what song is playing at media widget? what a problem. And still full one-hand usefull. (I don't know if using correct verbs in this post, excuse me if wrong ones)

IMHO the only function I see logical to be in a portrait orientation is the phone function. A button to click on and flip the web-browser to portrait mode could be a nice addition, but other than that - I don't think there is a generic need for portrait mode.
If someone who makes an application and wants it to be able to switch between landscape and portrait modes - so be it. But Nokia shouldn't have anything to do with it... Just IMHO.

There are lots o them, believe me. The kind of work-professional area everyone belongs to determine when portrait-when landscape is needed.
For me, using calculator-email-sms-calendar in landscape mode is a pain (I'm a Dirty Manager, main time walking, not sit down time!)
But when I'm "closing the day" or I want to make my little-crap-python-apps (for helping in my work), I of course don't miss portrait at all.

Again, freedom to choose, Nokia can't realize that needs change with the environment, and that we don't blame or beg only for fun, we does it because we NEED some features. But they don't want to listen "trolls".
I think this is a lost battle, what a shame.

It does not rotate desktop, you must open some app, then apply the trick (app-oriented, not desktop oriented)
