To develop something around the OS on all three; it certainly helps to understand that OS as well. This is not something "new".
I'll give you that scratchbox is a PITA. Hence; Post PR1.2 this should not be a problem due to the beta that is out.
As for the other responses.. you did see that I said it's not entirely Nokia's fault, right? Yes; Nokia can do games with "best software" this or "top 10 to code" that - but at the same time simple Market share, and community drive will also help. Things like that thread about hosting a small dev competition with a donated bucket of $$$ to the winner should help get you more apps.

You left a really insightful farewell letter that Nokia should take a serious look on.
But hey, don't expect too much from Nokia. We don't really hate Nokia, just feel disappointment. They've done the right thing creating N900, but that's about one of the very few right things that they've been done these years.
Nokia is only focusing on profit maximization these years. It was not like that years ago, when they were really wholeheartedly supporting symbian developers. Nowaday many symbian developing companies I personally know switch to midp development due to Nokia's marketing strategy changed (say symbian will not be positioned as smartphone in Nokia's strategy).
Nevertheless, N900 is still a very promising platform, just hope Nokia will not 'reposition' it for their 'profit-maximization' marketing strategy. -_-

I'm one of the people looking forward to the 1.2 upgrade for that very reason Fatal. I knew coming into the N900 that there was a big risk of ending up with a stagnant platform that takes off slowly, but I also believed that Nokia truly would make a big drive to get developers on board. They did so many things right but they failed at many a critical step. What I would like to see is a more cohesive and coordinated response from Nokia towards the platform. Overall I do see the Maemo/Meego platform becoming competitive in the long run, but not within the N900s lifetime.

there are 2 options:
-release really buggy fw
-test and fix bugs properly

Really, but really, do I have to explain? PR1.2 works in China N900s and Scratchbox. PR1.1.1 and PR1.1 would have the same issues, but they were released in time.
You can't just apply the same old argument after that long.
No product or patch will ever be bug-free. There's some compromise between releasing a patch in a timely manner and without too much bugs. Also, not every bug has the same impact. You can fix the most dangerous and impacting bugs and let the other, less serious bugs to be fixed in the next patch.
But this has been said in another threads. And I know that you're knowledgeable enough to know that from other posts you've made. That's what's driving me mad, why do you STILL think there might be a slight merit for Nokia on this issue? There isn't. PR1.2 should have been released. The most serious bugs should have been prioritised, forget about that small graphical glitch that appears after one week of use.
THIS is reality. It's not difficult to grasp. Not delaying a patch to infinite. There are bugs marked as fixed as early as january and we still don't have the fix, how serious is that -- extending the damage track of a bug? If the whole system were open-source like some linux distros, there would surely be communities builds of it at large. But no, Nokia chose the perfect imbalance by using the worst parts of the closed and open-source ecosystem! Congratulations, Nokia, for being evil and stupid at the same time.

The PR1.2 is delayed, stuff like this happens get over it.

The browser is more than capable of runiing Facebook and most other sites - you do not need specialised apps to use Facebook or Twitter.

Nokia as a company is extremely bad at communicating with it's customers and will have an impact on my next buying decision.

I'm not worried about development stagnancy, in three years we will still see people using the N900 on th streets, ignoring the newer models. For an example, think about the N95, I see dozens a week but I've only seen one N95 8gb, one N96 and two N97's. Hell, I bought the N95 a year and a half after its release.
I don't know if the N900 will live long on internet blogs but it's definetly going to stay in the real world.

I have enjoyed my N900 immensely - but since I upgraded my personal phone account to an HTC Desire, the N900 has only been switched on twice in three weeks and only then for an hour or so.
I am not a Linux person - I am just attracted to shiny things and I thought the N900 was one of my greatest conquests. It's a nice device, but I am not going to defend it like a Apple fan might defend an iPhone.
Even if PR1.2 is a revelation, it is going to take a lot to prise the SIM card out of my desire.

And I, like you, am surrounded by friends with Iphones and Android phones and I'm having a really hard time pointing out the strenghts of the N900 namely: Web Browsing and 32GB of integrated Space for Music and Films...because those are the only two things I frequently use along with the phone function.
