I've searched and found lots of helpful threads that helped me get it set up but not working the way I want it to.

I am able to connect over wifi on the router to my computer, but when I try to connect from 3G using the external IP it can't connect.

I'm using a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard if it helps.

Also through VNC is it possible to output audio through the phone? Ie If I wanted to listen to music on my iTunes remotely.

If you are able to connect via WLAN but can't connect via G3 it is most likely that you missed to forward vnc on your router.

At least port 5900 has to be forwarded to your notebook/PC/whatever because otherwise you try to connect to your router via vnc

p.s. If you want to connect TO your n900 - that is not possible via 3G

No, that would slow down VNC even more. For Windows there's a program named TVersity, which can stream music/videos/pics from your computer, I'm sure there's something like that for Mac.

As xtjonni said, if your client is behind your router, you need to set port forwarding.

But even when your client is having a public IP, it's a chance that your mobile (vnc server) is behind a firewall/gateway that doesn't forward your traffic.

So the issue is not as simple as you might imagine.

One solution is to drill a hole between client's and server's firewall, the simplest way is to do it by socat(on N900 side) and netcat(on PC side).

But the simplest way is still need some tinkering, just in case you want to go all the hassle to achieve your goal.

There's Knots 2 for that.
