Howdy all. I am looking into getting one of these wonderful little N800s you all seem to like.

But first I need to find out if it can work on the wifi network at my school. Here is a link to the page that describes what is needed to connect to the wifi. I have pasted some of it here. I am looking for a turn it on autoconnect setup, ideally running an alternative window manager (ROX or kde or whatever works, mostly to impress Linux geek friends). But really the most important thing is that the wifi works.

http://8help.osu.edu/2672.html
  • Encryption: WPA Radius with TKIP key exchange
  • Authentication: 802.1x with PEAP and MSCHAPv2
  • SSID: osuwireless
for WPA supplicant:
Code:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
eapol_version=1
ap_scan=1
fast_reauth=1

network={
ssid="osuwireless"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
eap=PEAP
identity="your-username"
password="your-password"
phase1="peaplabel=0"
phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
priority=1 }
So, is there hope for me? I know that lesser devices can connect with a good bit of trouble (the palm TX is a b*tch to get working, but it does eventually) and the iPhone that everyone is going to come back to school with doesn't work at all!

Also, a quickie, does Google Docs work? (mozilla based browser?)

Can't answer the first question, but check this recent thread

Re the second question, yes... after two updates the mozilla beta browser that we are testing appears to work fine with Google docs.

hrm, that doesn't seem too reassuring. I am not sure if I want to buy it without a little better reassurance.

does wpasupplicant work? what does it natively use for WPA?

Found this:

As with most things here I have no idea about the current status of things. They all seem to be pretty common buzzwords, so getting them working in some configuration should be doable.

I don't believe it's supported, and from comments in the developer mailing list Nokia seem unaware there is even a problem (despite several bug reports and numerous threads in this forum).

Well, damn. If someone could get wpa_supplicant working smoothly the problem would be solved. I suppose I can just wait and see then. Is anyone actually working on wpa_supplicant?

I am not sure, but the setup described in the OP sounds like what I connect to at work with my 770, and my boss uses his N800 on the same WLAN.

The only issue I have is that the certificate used here has expired and no windows client cares, so they will probably never bother to update it.

thanks. that's reassuring, and having an n800 would be rather handy, so I continue to look for a good deal.
