Ive got the same issue on a WINXP SP3 Machine....

So the fix above won't work for me because i already have it !

The screen goes dark with dots which are moving then abrubtly stops during the flash of the eMMC everything else flashes fine this appears to lock up when it starts.

As far as updating to XPSP3 goes... it will run the Windows Genuine Advantage software which runs before most of the newer software.

I think you will be able to install it but you will suffer with a pop up that your copy of windows is not Genuine there after.

I wouldn't condem this if you know if you have a non Genuine Windows install its better to look at upgrading to a Genuine version down the line if you can.

If the purchase becomes an issue at all you could install Ubuntu which is free this way you can use it for flashing but boot into windows current windows install when you like.

Install Ubuntu as a secondary OS so you have the option to choose which one you want to use after the Post boot phase of your pc.

You might even find you like Ubuntu and ending up ditching windows for it.

Does Ubuntu run Nokia PC-Suite or Ovi-Suite?

You may want to check system requirements of Ubuntu before installing to be sure.

Installation Documents can be found here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Installing Ubuntu is very simple if you have ever done an install of a Windows or Apple OS before you won't struggle with a Ubuntu Install.

It maybe easier for you to check if a friend has a Windows XP Machine updated with SP3 to flash your eMMC before installing Ubuntu although its entirely up to your self.

Have a read into Ubuntu, do a little bit of research into the OS before installing to be sure of what you are getting.
