how about an application that would allow you to send an sms to the handset the gets hidden, then responds with a sms message with a link to a google map and the co-ords?

This already exists for the n900 and even integrates nicely into conversations:

The problem with that solution is that it only shows your current location on a map and it doesn't allow you to save the points in time online so that people can see the track i've walked.

There is a branch of Map Buddy in progress to add the tracking feature and save the log in a file:

It can be hacked to send the position to your webserver instead.
Map Buddy does not publish your location, only Azimuth does (if it is installed and enabled in the control panel). Azimuth does not need to be installed to use the tracking feature in Map Buddy.
