I read from the news Nokia responded to media the USB hulk detachmant is the result of faulty USB port of the charger. Granted the charger is also made by Nokia, but you can always send them back for the repairment of the N900 and the replacement of charger. Newer batchs of N900 has already fixed this issue.

I cant quite make sense of this but i think you are saying the charger is the problem? please correct me if i am wrong.

The actual problem is indeed 2 fold as the port inself is glued and soldered to a minute pad on the main pcb and any force would push it clean off the board, the lead from the charger and the usb/pc lead Type CA101 can have raised edges depending on who actually manufactered them and is not easy to plug into the port itself, this is why many on here suggested filing down the connector to make it an easlier fit to the port to relieve forcable pressure plugging or inserting the lead into the port

Why Nokia decided to make the pads minute is beyond me that is why i remove the paint on the "earth" plane either side of the port and soldering to make it solid to the board

I really would like someone to take a closeup pic of a replacement N900 from Nokia so i can see the difference.

Anyhow the usb problem we can safetly say has been solved one way or another thanks once again to this community.

I am so far very happy with the N900.

But I think Nokia has really failed to earn this communities trust. When developing a device for the open source community you need to be open about your plans.

Bringing out new devices is to be encouraged. But if you are rellying on a volunteer community to support and build software for these devices then it is important to keep contact with the owners and developers of the new devices.

Nokia started to see negativity here after the 770 was replaced with the N800 and backwards support was lost. The N900 has only reinforced that opinion.

If Nokia wants this community to continue as a unbiased supporter of their ITTs they need to be more supportive of the users with older devices.

The main hope we have now is that Meego will allow us to move away from Nokia.

EDIT: TL;DR

If you want people to invest both their money in a new device and a huge amount of their own time producing software to make that divice useful. Then you need to convince them that the divice will be supported longer then the average cell phone.
I absolutely agree with you here and it is a sad trend of Nokia to do this as they quickly move on to new devices leaving a trail of un-supported elements behind them so yes a very valid point.

This is when this community can come into its own and give that support as it is doing so on all Nokia devices and if the "pissing" contests can be dealt with in an appropriate manner by the moderators then this community will start to shine and be noticed by Nokia which in turn should make them more reliable on support to this forum.

Huh? Why does the USB port design have anything to do with the n900 being replaced with the next design?

I understand your frustration and also see you've been struggling with the problem for quite some time.

What I want to say is that that Nokia acknowledges the issue, they just denied the accusation regarding the design failure of N900. No matter it's a design failure on N900 or the charger, Nokia has taken the responsibility to repair.

I'm not going to stop you from soldering by yourself, but imho the time it takes to research and tinker is enough for you to take your N900 to repair and back.

Your choice.

Edit: redundency

Because it is the only REAL fault the N900 has/had and a very costly one to Nokia.
If you know anything about design factors then any company worth their salt will either re-design or cut there losses and bring out a complete new design altogether.
As the N900 lost it's credibility very fast due to this problem is probably the reason.

Also, unlike what abill_uk has/is doing, taking it in for repairs does not void your warranty. Which, IMO, purposefully voiding your warranty, is a pretty idiotic thing to do.

The n9 was always going to be a new design.
