Great phone? The phone app (i.e. Telephony + Messaging) isn't as good as say a blackberry. It is ok not great.

The only bad I have to say about the phone is the PIM not what you would expect from Nokia, the Candider alarms round off to the nearest 12 hrs, PIM Notes and Task applications suck on the n900 -There is a sudo search in some apps., but you can't search your data on the phone. other than that i think it is the best device out there. one other warning, if you use the phone don't expect the battery it to last all day.

My main concern is that it looks complicated to just "move" around the phone and different features and like you said, a lot of things are landscape, but I think i cold get use to that.
Hey, I switched from an N96 to an N900 too, so I want to point out what I noticed most.

What I love:
-Web browsing is AMAZING on the n900, n96 was nowhere close, everything was such a hassle, even on opera, compared to the n900.
-Backgrounds/desktop customization, is also awesome. So easy to customize and add buttons and widjets everywhere Also, the loopable, panoramic view desktop is very nice. There are quite a few pleasant panorama images you can use. www.n900wallpapers.com
-Skype!!! And other chat services (I only have facebook chat, ask others for the different types of chat you can integrate with texts and stuff). Skype is built in just like a normal phone call and text, for free (to other skype computers), as the N900 is considered a computer.
-Internet connectivity. It seems so much easier than my n96, probably due to the roots of Maemo and internet tablets before. Whenever I'm at work, school, or home, its always on corresponding wifi. When im in between it switches to 2g or 3g (whatever i feel like doing).
-Resistive touchscreen. Yes, I prefer resistive over capacitive. A big reason is that I can use the styles, but mainly my pencil tip/lead/eraser/stylus. Which leads to: able to click small links without always having to zoom in.

What I miss:
-Dedicated (non-slider) media keys. It was really convenient changing songs and stuff quickly with the stealth/hidden media keys
-App selection. I didn't jam-pack my N96 with apps at all, so this doesn't affect me much, but I think there are MANY more apps for symbian than Maemo 5.
-Google Maps. I think this deserves it's own point. Ovi Maps got A LOT better after the recent 1.2 firmware, but I still miss Google maps which isn't available on Maemo 5, yet?
-Battery life. Fact, the N96s battery lasted longer than my N900. On the other hand though, I do MUCH more with my n900. Also, it's nice I can charge via USB as well as wall socket.

Grey Area:
-Camera, some days I think the n900 camera is better, some days I think the N96 camera is better. I can't decide. Maybe the software side of n900 camera is still catching up to the features offered on the N96 camera. For example the 1.2 firmware that just released for the N900 brought a few more features and settings to the camera. I like that the N900 has a lens cover though, its easier to just open that which will start the camera instead of pressing and holding the camera key on the n96.

Other:
I don't know why people say the N900 is hard to use. I've used Symbian phones forever, and I think Maemo 5 is way more intuitive and pleasing. Although I did love exploring the endless menus in my symbian phones, I would also discover some stupid setting in a new folder :P I think it's very easy to move around on the phone, due to the lack of endless folders, and the ability to put shortcuts for almost ANYTHING on your desktop, just like on a laptop or desktop computer.

I've experimented with the command line 3 times:
apt-get moo
top
apt-get (some file name to complete installation of a "Prismic Wallpaper Manager").
I've never used command line or Linux operating systems or anything like that before, I'm a total noob. I don't feel like I'm missing out, although there are probably some cool things you can do with the command line, like fetch files from your computer at home :P

It really is like a mini computer.

In conclusion, I am very happy I bought the N900 ($530 newegg.com when I bought it), and would do it all over again ($470 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-178-_-Product )

Phew, that was long. I hope it was helpful. Any N96 vs. N900 questions?

HI NATHAN!

It's amazing you found this forum, and managed to make a topic exactly like the other 1000 topics just like it, but you somehow didn't actually read any of those other topics.

Clearly, the n900 is therefore too complicated for you.

On a more serious note, you do not need a chainsaw to cut a loaf of bread. Using the n900 like a free flip phone is kinda overkill in the same way.

Enjoy whatever you do get. Maybe one of the Samsungs?

I admit that is funny, and possibly deserved. But I'm pretty sure judging things based on first impressions is a trait best left for Apple fanboys, so try to set a good example :P
Seriously though, to the other people telling him "no", I hope you're doing it out of honesty and not some grudge against Nokia. Just because the phone isn't everything you want it to be doesn't mean it's a bad device. This guy didn't write like a 12 year old kid, and at least he *found* the forum, we don't have to assume he's too dumb for a smartphone just because he didn't bother searching. Although maybe I don't want to answer his 600 questions about how to install quake and why we won't write him an app to make his dinner. Whatever. I don't know. Flip a coin.

We really need a sticky to answer threads like this.

Basically, it comes down to this.

Are you happy with the n900 as it is NOW ? That is, assume Nokia and the community here gets hit by a nuclear bomb tomorrow and ceases to exist - i.e. there will be no support of ANY type from tomorrow onwards - will you still be happy with the phone as it is TODAY ? i.e. no meego, no flash 10.1, no ovi, no TMO updates, no PR1.3 - NOTHING except what the N900 has NOW today.

This is NOT sacarsm or hyperbole - the above question is the utter truth. Unlike Apple or Google, Nokia has shown itself not to be committed to the n900/maemo 5 as a future platform, so you cannot rely on official support. Community/unofficial support is ALSO uncertain - for all you know when Meego comes out all the devs will move to develop for OFFICIAL Meego, and N900 will become a desert - not saying this is 100% certain but neither is it out of the realms of possibility (in fact I consider it very likely).

If the answer is YES - and support is NOT important to you, then this phone IS for you. Hence the geek/coder comparisons - because these guys love the N900 because they can mess with its internals, they wouldnt give a frig whether there is support or not. These guys can do stuff on their own. And good on them because this is the uba phone for them. No other phone is better in this aspect.

If having NO support in the future makes you hesitate because support when the phone breaks IS important to you and you do NOT have the time or the expertise to fix this yourself then this phone is NOT for you. Instead get a DROID or Apple (or even windows mobile or blackberry or wahtever) where support IS available.

Here is a real life example of the above that recently happened to the n900 (and which I had to spend hours fixing).

Example - since the release of PR1.2, MANY (look up the threads) have experienced issues with very poor N900 battery life due to badly coded widgets that were OK prior to PR1.2. When PR1.2, these guys have had to reflash and install their widgets 1 by 1 themselves (and monitoring battery life/CPU load IN BETWEEN each installation) to find out WHICH widget was causing the battery drain and uninstall it. Obviously this takes alot of time (some guys have 10s of widgets installed) and effort depending on how many widgets you have to play with.

If doing the above makes you blanch and say "I dont have time to fiddle around like this", then do NOT get the N900.

if doing the above makes you happy because you like to tinker and optimise your phone, then the N900 IS for you - for the best price get it second hand for a user that doesnt like it.

Ignore all blanket options of YES or NO in this thread - whether the n900 is suitable depends on your expectations for the product.

If you're looking for a good PHONE, don't buy N900.
