on the flip side of this issue I wonder if you could make your own antenna extensions!

It's fundamentally a design error. Using surface mount connector in this case was a very poor choice.

As far as manufacturing issues, they weren't Nokia's. It's obvious the PCB supplier provided an inferior product for the motherboard. Copper plating should not remove so easily; looks like a bonding problem.

I'm guessing based upon the silicone sleeve I purchased for my N800 way back when. Those were $20 to $30 + shipping from Boxwave and the other known-brand handheld accessory companies, and that's without the "Apple tax". On eBay, from Hong Kong companies, the N800 sleeves were more like $3 to $6 shipped, and I expect those Hong Kong dealers were still making a healthy profit.

Really, we should have seen this situation coming. We know Jobs is strongly anti-porn, so no surprise that even his hardware insists on being clothed at all times now. (Ba-dum-chhh!)

I agree it's not the best choice. But if it held fine in tests, why not use it (assuming it's cheaper or ... easy ... cheaper or simpl... Hm. Notice how everything translated to cheaper?)

Not everyone has bullet proof gas tanks, and only a few are involved in explosions. Cost justifies thinner tanks. Now if a tank is poorly made and explodes, I don't think it's fair to consider thin tanks a design flaw. Even if 2-ton tanks would have held.

No matter. For the example of this thread, any design flaw will do. Wrong positioning of headphones, wrong positioning of charger, blue cover that reflects flash, single and flimsy kickstand, poorly affixed under-keyboard bar, you pick.

I thought that was the problem.

There are also videos that show if you place a key over the gap, it causes the reception to drop. So not that I think any iPhone oner would have anything metallic in their pocket but that might mean that if you put your phone in the same pocket as your keys, you probably would miss most of the incoming calls.

The cost difference is extemely tiny. Not even close to being a factor. Even so, it's worth it to head off inevitable return costs due to dislodged connectors, not to mention the bad word-of-mouth that results. In the case of hardware connectors, surface mount is just flat a bad idea.

Same for external antennas. I could have told Apple that. Anyone know what happens when you touch external, bare metal FM receiver antennae?

In the US it does
I don't think they care about the quality of the signal as much as the safety of the signal.

The company that did the testing submitted this.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/f...ive_or_pdf=pdf
(signal radiation patterns toward bottom)

Lots of interesting stuff here, but I don't know how to link it.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/...ericSearch.cfm
On search form enter "apple" in "Applicant Name".
Enter "06/01/2010" to " 06/24/2010" in Grant Date Range.
At the bottom of page click on "start search"
You should have the 12 records for the iPhone4.
Now the click on the "View Forms" or "Display Exhibits" links.

An exercise left to the reader
In particular choose a record that pertains to a cell frequency, click on details link and check out the internal photos. (antenna location)
I hope the FCC site can handle the traffic
Take care
