TBH i have no idea what's the correct way to check for this. I guess that script that measures time spent in different states maybe, but that would probably affect the results itself.

Thanks for the info; it's strange, all right. I've not really seen a change for better or worse on power kernel so i'm just leaving it be for now.

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?

Well, this is a little "feature" of the telephone application. There is nothing I can do about it. You could try editing /etc/pmconfig, maybe the telephone app honors the settings in there.
And usually "underclocking" is only useful if you play games on your N900. So before you launch a game or an emulator, just check QCPUFreq.
I personally do not use the phone functionality much (every two days maybe) - this is why I bought a tablet computer

About this temperature thing again:
Would you agree with a factor of 0.65? This would mean 48 raw = 31 real. To me this sounds realistic.

FYI the general consensus about 125 MHz is that it actually reduces battery life with well-behaved applications due to the slower race-to-idle (presumably why Nokia didn't use it).

The best explanation that fits with both of your observations is that you have something installed and running that doesn't let the processor sleep much (see e.g. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=29284). Have you got some kind of CPU load monitor running to check for the culprit?
aha!i have the the same problem. i think when ive loaded it to 'ideal' , my battery life has reduced. but, i AM online (busy to be precise.i use busy because it supposedly uses less battery than online.) on gtalk through wifi throughout the day.
is that MY culprit?

No placebo either - I was surprised (given how happy many people have been with power kernel) but both Battery Eye and the DCEW showing output of lshal pointed to my battery dropping off a cliff on Ideal. No reboots though.

And my battery life on day 2 of QCPUFreq alone is noticeably, actually measurably better ( 68% now after 12 hours use, as opposed to 40 odd percent on stock and 30 odd percent on ideal ) .

I can't explain it, but there.

Overall my little N900 has been exceptionally well-behaved on both software and hardware fronts. I'm quite content to sit back and enjoy my newfound lease on battery life for now
wow. okay so can you tell me in detail what your settings are?u have the ideal setting running?or did u reboot your phone before youve installed cpufreq?
and what are your settings on cpufreq?

Just using the stock kernel, and CPU freq 125 min, 500 max

hmm..but doesnt that make your phone extremely slow and unresponsive?have you tried running a few apps that needs 600 mhz?

TBH the performance hit IMHO is negligible, and the battery saving noticeable !

Exactly what apps need 600 MHz ? (I'm not really into emulators)

Phone.

Also, intensive stuff like HAM and video capture suffer.

Yup I know Phone resets the CPU to 600 MHz - not sure if anyone with more technical insight than I possess could confirm that it needs 600, but that's what it pegs the CPU at...

I'll test video capture today....so far though (and obviously YMMV etc etc) my settings work just fine for the daily tasks (especially at work) that my N900 ambles through.

Fortunately it's easy enough, through QCPUFReq, to open up the throttle with two clicks.

When needed.

I was unable to operate wifieye in parallel with a call at 600.
