I need to contact the current maintainer of claws and see if they have any objections, but I would really like to modify the UI on this.
claws-mail is super nicelly written and has served my needs a couple of years at least.
If you'd like to help bringing a new facelift you can contact the developers at:
http://www.claws-mail.org/
My current plans are to use something like tinymail and Qt, with GPG support. I think modifying and maintaining claws will be far too painful atm.

I would avoid anything camel-based (ie tinymail or evolution) for IMAP support personally, it's just too broken IMHO. Possible alternatives include libetpan (seems to work fine in claws at least) and QMF (particularly if you're going down the Qt route). On the Qt front, another option would be to look into backporting the MeeGo handset client, when that materialises.
Another project that had a lot of promise was telomer/polymer (the author really groks IMAP), but it seems dead for a long time now.
If anyone has some suggestions, please let me know
