Netbook doesn't equal a tablet. Similar devices... yeah. But not the same form factor.

All of the tables I've owned have been fanless and relatively noiseless (the Toshiba had a spinning drive, but at the time that was the technology). Need I point out the N700/800 series, no fans or noise there. Both the JooJoo and the U1 are solid state and fanless as well, both weigh about the same as the iPad, and have just as much processing power (if not more). Again, the iPad is nothing new. It's just the first time you can get it with an Apple logo on it.

Tablets have never sold well, mainly because it was hard to do anything on a computer without a keyboard. With touch technology, and better designs I think we're getting close to a design that people may be able to use. That, and the nature of computing is changing, from being a work/input device to being a consumer/output device. Less need for input (or a better way to do it, like speech recognition) will drive the tablet closer to mainstream.

And that's the million dollar answer. The only reason the iPad has seen the sales it's seen has been because it has an i in front of it's name. If you'd released the exact same hardware and software, but put "Dell" on the cover, it wouldn't have sold a tenth of it's current volume. The iPad is riding on the coat tails of the iMac and the iPhone.

I do think the iPad has had a positive effect on the tablet market in general though. As more people realize that giving up the keyboard doesn't mean giving up your ability to submit your input to things, attitudes about tablets will change. In that regard the iPad has been a game changer. But make no mistake, the hardware and the concept is not new by any means.

No Apple hater here. My main computer is a Macbook I have a Mac Mini connected to my TV. And I still use an old iBook for home surveilance.
But I will never buy and iPad or iPhone. Too locked down. AT&T in the US is a horrible company all around. And the UI on the iPad just seems so Disney to me, as if made for children. But it's that "too locked down" part that gets me. I recoil just thinking of it. I will decide what programs and media I can use, thank you very much.
The iPad has been executed perfectly. Apple is very smart. But that thing kind of makes me sick

I think finger friendly is key. I don't care if it's capacitive or resistive, as long as it works as well as the current capacitive and does not require you to take out and sheath a pointy apparatus everytime you need to interact with the slate.
I think Google is waiting till Gingerbread (3.0) before pushing Android tablets though. I think most of the improvements in 3.0 are going be more tablet centric than what their current updates have been.

JooJoo has 5 hour wifi life vs 10 hr for the iPad.
The U1 also has a 5 hour wifi life, although I can't find any retailer selling it as of yet.

But yes they are both recently launched competitors.

I thought nowadays you just need to hold differently to stop transmission issues?

I'm on the side of finding a tablet myself... but my requirements are a bit different. I don't even need root. I just need to be able to use what I need to use (cbr/cbz, web, IM, video IM, e-mail, ability to view flash based webpages)... and it falls short in this iteration and yet no other sizable tablet outside of the Dell Streak (not yet released in the US) does what I want.
What size screen are you after Gerbick? There might be a UMPC to suit you. Such as the Viliv s5 which can be underclocked to over 8 hrs wifi/3g use.

I saw one on the DC Metro the other day..for a while I thought...what on earth is that device before I saw the Viliv, and then I remembered that it was mentioned here before.

Man that guy had alot of tech, must've been a defense contractor or something considering he had a BlackBerry (likely work issued), a laptop, the Vilviv, and his personal cell phone which looked like a Droid X/Incredible.
