Is the only way to do this via wine? or can the application be installed?

You dont need ovi suite or nokia pc suite.

On the phone connect - hit "pc suite" mode and on the pc you'll have a "usb0" interface created. Set up the IP addresses at each end, and routing, install the kernel-maemo kernel and iptables (for NAT) and bingo - job done. There are plenty hints around - search for "usb0" "NAT" "tether" or "tethering"

chances are quite good, that it will work out of the box with the graphical tools…

worked for me with the (recent) graphical network-managers in KDE and Gnome, just connect the phone in PC-Suite-Mode, and enter your connection details in the GUI…

eh? Just plug it in and click "pc suite mode". Ubuntu will see it as a USB serial port, and "Network Manager" will see it as a "mobile broadband" device.
The question is not clear - you want to use the n900 as a 3G modem for the PC?

I'm using the O2 network on contract and Ubuntu 10.04 on an Eee 1005HA for this guide.

First, ensure your internet connection on your phone is enabled.
Attach N900 to computer via USB and choose PC Suite on the phone.
Right click the networking icon in the tray on Ubuntu.
Tick "Enable Mobile Broadband".
Now, left click the icon and choose "New Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection..."
A new window will appear. Hit the Forward button.
Choose your country and hit the Forward button.
Select your provider and hit the Forward button.
Select your plan and hit the Forward button.
Then hit "Apply" on the next page.

Close the window, left click the network tray icon and hit your new connection.

Et voila!

This is posted via my O2 connection, so I know it works...

How do i disconnect it from PC Suite mode? I simply removed the USB cable and the next time when i try to connect in mass storage mode it does not allow me to. But it connects in PC Suite mode.

Buggy, ain't it?

Try unplugging and replacing it again, selecting 'mass store' a second time. Usually works.
If that fails, it means some process is hogging the MyDocs partition.
You need to reboot, or otherwise kill the offending process.
