So. I got my n900. Played with it a little bit. Flashed it back to factory settings and clean installed all apps I found usefull (that's how I like to do it). After that it runned much smoother than before, even the app manager (and I haven't overcloacked it). Phone runned suprisingly fast aniway.

Now, the only thing I need is deacent ftp manager, and since there isn't any (no offense to the developers) I oppened my terminal, and find out that there's no ftp command supported

Is there any way (that will not destroy the phone) to get ftp/sftp functions?

I thought the N900 had a native FTP command. Maybe not. Never tried until after I had already installed some FTP clients.

I personally think N900FTP is good. I think gFTP or whatever had more functions, but it wasn't hildonized, thus not at all finger friendly (and in some ways a bit stylus unfriendly). N900FTP, however, I find to be just fine. Is there anything specific you don't like about the currently available FTP clients available?

They are, if I'm not mistaken, both open source, so if you or someone you can ask has coding experience surely you could create a tweaked UI version to your liking?

You can use scp direct from the command line if this helps?

Not sure where/why there is no 'ftp' - and the one you can install doesn't work fails at "Setting up krb5-config"

There is a gftp-text package, but I don't remember in which repository.

EDIT: it's in extras-devel

I find it a little bit unpractical, but thanks. Still, I wonder how this ftp clients work if there's no ftp?

I insist: there is a cli ftp client in extras-devel called gftp-text, and also a gui client called n900ftp.

If you don't like to enable extras-devel in your app manager, go grab them from your browser.

gftp: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d...e/free/g/gftp/

n900ftp: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d...ree/n/n900ftp/

They work well both.

Midnight Commander has an excellent ftp utility,
dual panels for remote and local as well.
Maybe not what you are looking for,
but...

{If.. you are doing ftp over the n900:
...Then... it follows you probably might benefit from the other
bits that mc can also do...}

WHAT? There's midnight commander for this baby? This changes the whole story. I must have missed hi somehow.

@debernardis I have extras enabled, but I find ui's of those programs un efficient and unpracticall to use, allso very unorganised so I'd rather use terminal. Appreciate your help.
