I have searched everywhere but can't find out how to do this.

I want to create short cuts to files, such as PDFs, Word documents, photos and place this on my desktop.

perhaps with QueenBeecon, calling the program that opens it with the file in question as a parameter?

i haven't actually tested this but perhaps using a URL shortcut that is prepended with file:// might work??

file:/// shortcuts do work.
Open "file:///" in microb - go find the directory of your file, long tap on it and set it as a bookmark, then put the bookmark on one of your desktops. Done

OMG... you're right... o.o ... i'm still asking myself why my brain thought it doesn't work o.O...

By the way.. instead of using the bookmarks... i suggest to use this leetut's great workaround of :

The only problem is that, using *.desktop files, the "links" appear even in the menu .. :/

Mmm... it works only for the most common files (mp3, jpg ecc.. )...
The only way is with QBW , like suggested by tiago .. :/

From x-terminal it seems that we can make everything...
Here a user has managed to create a beecon that makes super mario starts through mupen64:

We should find a way to open Abiword, or the program that you want, and say it to open the file...
But i can't help you
