Polar opposite in the sense of openness, yes. But very similar in the sense that there is a focus on services (content-oriented hubs in WP7, Conversations, Contacts etc on Maemo) instead of apps. Interesting Ballmer quote:

The market's still pretty nascent, but at the end of the day, I think the wall-of-icons [on iPhones and Android devices] is getting pretty complicated for people. That doesn't mean people don't want applications, though I'm not sure that's really the way the average person really wants to work.
This angle might be a big opportunity for Maemo/MeeGo as well, the infrastructure with things like Telepathy and Tracker is already there. Think of how Skype integrates with our N900s, where it on other phones is "yet another app"

Apple just trademarked:

"There's an App for That"

Maybe Nokia can trademark:

"There's a Plugin for That"

I quessed that you all know about the faulty behaviour of ovi maps app and didn't want to start bending iron wire.

You don't need an 'app' to do that.

Believe me I know he may be kicked or something...

But there is no statement and Jaaksi accidently leaves when two other veterans quit. For me this is not a good sign.

You are maybe not able to understand such thinking. Maybe when Saab crashed you just thought "Beautyfull how heaven is blue..."

And yes, you never know her. Because she's a woman. But where is the relation?
well I did not say it is a good sign what I meant was we dont know there is ALOT of rumors out there atm. And I am one also worried but at the same time better wait and see than listen to mush on all rumors.

With Nokia's misguided and demented obsession with "market segmentation" that should be "There's a phone for that"

Very well said. Even I think this wall of icons and oodles of home screens (1, 3, 4, going up to 9 on N900) is goimg to become a messy way to handle imformation on a mobile device.

How many apps can you open up for each bit of information to be viewed and across how many screen will you keep panning to get at a particular app ?

Its the seamless plugin with the base OS that will matter in the future ... i.e. any app (at least most) should plugin to the main base application to get and deliver some information - much like how Skype plugsin to the contacts to show presence and other information.

So I think W7 (and if Meego can carry this forward) will be the direction to go as mobile platforms mature and the blingy nature of "wall of apps" become a routine and people realise its shortcomings.

you are absolutely spot on. Microsoft WP7 is a step ahead of what Maemo brought to the table, services integration into OS. Instead of millions of apps, OS is one big app. Very interesting approach.

Nokia Meego device simply cannot get the same kind of hype that it got with maemo5 n900, its a lost opportunity. Nokia has a lot to ponder and work on ..

"Earlier this month, Ari Jaaksi resigned as head of Nokia’s MeeGo division, citing “personal reasons” as the cause for his departure.

Turns out “personal reasons” was actually a euphemism for “I’m joining Palm.”

Sources close to the company tell me that Jaaksi has hired on as Senior Vice President of webOS at Hewlett-Packard’s Palm division. He’s to start in November, after relocating to the Bay Area, and when he does, he’ll lead Palm’s webOS engineering team.

OTOH, where else will you find a VP that 'gets' Linux?
