(I feel like a tape player today!! - all the same questions )

Can you go into x-terminal and type
Code:
top
then press enter

(Use the volume rocker to make smaller/larger on screen)
Then screenshot it and post it up here.
Use ctrl+Shift+P to screenshot, the file will be stored in images/screenshots.

It should give information on what processes are using how much ram

Linux ram usage is always high, it doesn't put most of it in swap (virtual memory) like Windows.

This is how linux is designed to work, which is why it is always quicker at doing stuff than Windows.

Well apparently i feel my debian distro utilises much much lesser Ram than its win32 cousin.

Really, the main difference between windows and linux memory usage is that it's hard to get 'individual' or 'correct' on linux.
Thing is, on linux most everything shares libraries - bits of code - between multiple programs. So, if you have three programs all using the same 1mb library, what's using the memory?
On windows, generally programs are self contained packages, and things (seem) to be a bit less cloudy.

Just take it that "linux works this way" and ignore it unless you are doing relative comparisons.
