I had similar problems... have you overclocked your n900? After weeks of being unable to play my own videos or movie files I played before i realized that I had set the voltage a little too low and for some reason videos would only play a few seconds or not at all. You may want to try either inspecting your clock speeds and voltages or flash a stock kernel for testing purposes. Hope this helps a little.
