There's clearly something, a widget or an app maybe, that's running in the background doing something. Maybe something that's turning on GPS on occasion, or tracker could be indexing things too frequently. I get better battery usage than that with a SIM in and 2.5G/wifi constantly on. (I also have power kernel loaded with ulv settings, and have tweaked a few settings though.)

If you want to find out what's causing the battery drain, do what several people have suggested and install a battery monitor app. There are a few options, all free, and running such a tool for even a few hours will probably pin point what app is causing the drain.

Here's my real question: If you don't have wifi, or a sim, or any type of connectivity, and you're not using it for a whole day, why is it even on? You're better off just turning it off when you're not using it, and turning it on when you want to use it (for whatever it is you're using it for). It's not like it takes all that long to boot, and I'd bet you'd get much better life out of it, even with the power cost of booting.

What's trackerd? Some kind of indexing service?

To be honest it all seems to me like we are beta testers and the easiest way how to deal with N900 problems is just to turn it off... :-/

Yes, trackerd is the indexing service on the system. There are lots of tools for configuring it, and it's default settings are for typical use situations. That includes re-indexing every day or so, and indexing whenever a USB cable is removed, or the back case is restored, as it remounts the internal flash or sd card on those actions and wants to quickly look for changes.

I'm curious... do you own a computer? Most of them have the same issues, since you have the freedom to configure it and install whatever you like. You'd be hard pressed to find another computer of this caliber running on a battery for more than 5 or 6 hours, yet alone a day or two.

This is not an MP3 player. It's not a candy-bar dumb phone. It's not a low powered, slow CPU PDA. It's pretty much a full computer, comparable to most netbooks on the market today. And frankly it runs longer on it's internal battery, doing more things, than any laptop or netbook I've ever owned.

I just don't get why people expect this device to last for 8 years on a single charge. Nothing else like it lasts even close to that.

I'm curious, can you read? Had you read my original question? The device went down 60 % in less than a day without being used. Maybe read other people's post before posting stupid questions like "do you own a computer?" No I don't have, I post this via a superior being.

Is the USB/charger cable connected? If so, disconnect it, it eats a lot of power.

Any tips?
Restarting completely wipes the battery meter. On start it just makes a guess.

I'm not saying this is necessarily the cause of your problem, but there's a bug in the N900 modem that makes it consume more power when a SIM is not installed.

Don't use animated wallpaper or Gas balls from ovi store. They kinda eat up batts too.
