I use lots of text files in place of a PIM - I happily keep them on two computers and a USB stick and keep them synchronised.

I installed leafpad so that I could edit them on the N800. The application works perfectly - a lot better than using Notes.

I don't know what I did, but the behaviour of the n800 file manager has changed. It used to be that it would launch Notes for txt files. Now, when I double-click on a txt file, leafpad is launched but without loading the txt file concerned - I am presented with a blank page.

How can I get it to open the file properly?

If I can't, how can I go back to opening the file in Notes?

Regrettably, I do not have a solution for you -- but I did have the same problem with leafpad. I uninstalled it to revert back to the built in text editor.

It must be something simple that needs to be changed in the MIME mapping, but I did not want to muck around without really understanding what I was doing.

Looking forward to a proper solution. Perhaps there is better text editor that behaves correctly?

Although I have searched these forums and Gnome I have not found a solution for this; I and others have the same problem with Evince & KMPlayer in that they launch but do not open the actual file

Now here there is a solution
You will need Xterm and becomeroot installed.
Open up Xterm and type the following hitting 'enter' after each line(apologies if I am overdetailing):

sudo gainroot
cd /usr/share/applications
leafpad defaults.list

The above will create & open up an empty file called defaults.list in the /usr/share/applications folder.
Copy & paste the following into it:

text/plain=hildon-osso_notes.desktop

& then save it.

Now when you open a text file it will open in 'notes' again; you don't need to restart anything as its effect is immediate.
[based on info I found here]

Thanks.

Now the maemo garage is back, I can get back to tinkering with my n800.

Didn't work. Even after I switched the n800 off and on again.

As the above did the trick on my system there must be something else going on.
You might want to do the following:

sudo gainroot
cd /usr/share/applications
leafpad mimeinfo.cache &

Check whether it contains a line similar to this:
text/plain=hildon-osso_notes.desktop;hildon-browser.desktop;hildon-leafpad.hildon.desktop;

The order left to right also determines what program gets used; it is overruled by the defaults.list file though.
