To change my N800 from a living room laptop replacement to a real working information/communication tool, I'm finding that I need the sort of ubiquitous internet access that you can only get from a mobile provider.

I've been told (here) that some folks are getting a $15/month sprint data plan, although new signees will have to pay $20/month. (I would fall under that 'new signee' category, BTW)

Does anyone have a better deal than $15/month? T-Mobile has a $5.99/month T-MobileWeb plan, but they aren't forthcoming with the details. In August there was a discussion here that touched on it, but it sounded like it may be a WAP only service.

What do you guys do to get your N800 to have total internet access when you are away from wifi?

ps - I just edited the title to reflect that I am looking for US data plans, but I don't really mean to restrict the discussion if poeple want to open it up to data plans that people in other counties find to be a good deal for them.

i use the tmobile $5.99 a month unlimited plan. the only issues are that it is about 56k fast, and you have to run through a proxy server. otherwise, its great! i've used it on my cell phone (opera), tethered to my laptop, and of course, with my n800.

I use the T-Mobile $5.99 plan as well, but its pretty limited, speed is not much of an issue so far, but you can only use it for web browsing it seems, and for some reason the other day I couldn't go to secure web pages(coulda swore I was able to before) not sure what this issue is but it was annoying...

Anyone have any idea how to use this service for more than web browsing(ie chat/im, music streaming, etc...)

I use the Sprint $15 a month plan. It's great, especially if you can get a EVDO rev A phone; the speeds (should be) incredible. (I only have Rev 0, myself, and my phone's bluetooth stack caps even that... but it's still much faster than the T-Mobile plan I used to have.)

I use the Sprint SERO plan. Search for it on the FatWallet Hotdeals forum. It costs $30 a month total and includes 500 minutes talk, 7pm and weekends free, free Sprint to Sprint, Unlimited data, Unlimited text messages, Unlimited picture mail, and free roaming. It also includes some Sprint TV services and Handango stuff. That is the lowest plan level. From there you can go up in minutes for more $. I haven't seen a plan with unlimited data for as cheap anywhere.

You can find info, for how to use the n800, over DUN, without incurring further charges.

I use Sprint's Vision EVDO as well and highly recommend it IF you're in an area with EVDO coverage.

This is because you're running through a proxy server. FTPing or SSHing somewhere typically does not work. Though, there was a day or so a year ago where they took their proxy server offline, and it was AWESOME. I want to clear up that you CAN get to HTTPS/ Secure sites... you just need to make sure you have a proxy address for this in your phone's proxy settings.

In Canada, pretty much every single plan is a complete ripoff. With the new AT&T roaming deal, it's actually cheaper to get an AT&T phone from the US and use it roaming with data than it is to just be local with data.

Zerojay you are correct! the telcos are ripping us off every chance they get. Do you see the charges if you go over your alloted GBs... I support any business who has a free WiFi hotspot... Later
