Protected bootloader for the Tab getting you down? Well worry no more!

From XDA:
Ok, I have spoken to Rotohammer, and he has sent me the files for the fix.

It is a sensitive fix, and thus we are not just releasing it. We will be making an APK that does the unlocking for you, so there’s no chance you mess up the commands and brick your device. That is, at least, if we don’t mess up the APK

Expect the APK to go into (closed!) testing early next week, with hopefully a public release early the week after that.

Here's some very interesting news regarding the new Amazon Android

App store. It seems that Amazon will be setting the retail price for its apps, and not developers:

http://www.businessinsider.com/amazo...pricing-2011-1

Seems interesting. Developers looking for a minimum price sold for their products will likely side step this marketplace without some precedent of monetary return prior to being released. Of course, this gives Amazon an incredible competitive edge when it comes to price, as they can literally lower the price, or draw people in with free apps (at cost to them -- and lower returns to the developer).

Interestingly, as Amazon is a profit generating retailer, they will do everything in their power to maximize profits, which should be quite comforting to developers selling in the marketplace.

I actually like this model a lot more than the developer-as-a-direct-wholesaler model of current app stores. It fosters stronger competition among retailers and Amazon will be able to strategically set consumer prices to remain competitive or maximize profit; similar to the way retail operations function today.

Of course, the difference between retail operations today, is that there is a pre-negotiated minimum per-unit price based on the product and volume. This doesn't exist in the Amazon model. As a developer, this would be worrying, but time will tell if there is need to worry.

Need a monitor to output your tab to? How about the new 9-series 3D monitor from Samsung.

That thing is beautiful! Samsung is really knocking them out of the park in terms of design and quality.

I *love* that the components are encased in the bottom. Reason? No dangling cords when viewing from ANY angle. An elegant solution to a common aesthetic problem. Brilliant.

Well I've decided to join you chaps and have bought a shiny new Tab (as my N900 broke and I was lacking anything to hack on).

Am currently messing about with it and delighting in a working and useful email client, but will crack on with some Meego testing asap too!

Welcome aboard! Well, I can't actually welcome you to a place that I've never been, but you get the idea!

It's very nice to know that you're aboard and will be lending your skills to development! I look forward to what you have to share with the MeeGo port.

I'm still hoping for a X.org port to Android, so that a modern Linux desktop could be run from within Android sans VNC. Currently Ubuntu has been ported, and can be run using VNC, but it would be delightful to be able to run Ubuntu apps directly from within Android without skipping a beat -- and with good performance.

Bought one for wife (while buying my spare n900 development unit)

The Samsung proprietary connector is a bit of a hideous kludge,
but the screen, audio and battery life are all simply beautiful.

Too bad it cannot run Meego natively,
but that has to wait for the next Foxconn device I guess.

With all the talk about trying to find source code for the Samsung specific bits, I couldn't tell whether or not you were already looking through this site:

http://opensource.samsung.com/

On my Verizon version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the OS identifies the model as the SCH-I800 (USA). You can find our your model number by starting at the desktop, tap the MENU button below the screen, tap SETTINGS, scroll down and tap ABOUT DEVICE and look at MODEL NUMBER.

There's an article here with the list of model numbers for the various versions of the device:

Huwa!

Have not been paying attention, there is more than just a few bits of code there.

There is hope out there, after all.

Yes I've got that. Judging by the success with the Nexus S, it should be easy enough to get a system up and running (he says).

The missing items are powervr (I've emailed Samsung and will have a look at modifying the OMAP4 driver if they don't reply) and modem (and therefore probably GPS too) comms, which will need some reverse enginerring. All good fun
