Solution - do not have an IM alert, or as Turkishflavour said, change to silent with vibration on.
That is not true. The N900 would be able to handle this easily. The playback is muted by design so that the notification is audible. It seems to be a phone policy requirement for Nokia.

does every one have the same problem???
on my phone when music is playing if i get an im or a message i just get a light tone with no reduction in volume(for the music) and not the designated sound for that message or IM

Create an empty wav file, use it as the IM sound?

That sounds more reasonable.

If I set the profile on silent, MANY apps (I think actually all apps) wouldn't make any sound anymore....

We need a real patch for this... not just a work around

Yeh, ok, my bad for not making it clear and dumbing it down. Of course the driver can handle multiple threads but because of the configuration of the handset only one process can access the PulseAudio driver at a time, basically locking the other process out through (I would imagine) an IRQ type request, and when the higher priority process has finished the lower priority one is then able to kick back in.

Apologies for not making clearer first time round.

Loudspeaker or earpiece?

For me it's earpiece (more precisely, BT headphones)

Worse, after the pause ,the music plays though the phone speaker for a half-second before coming back to the headphones.

Sloppy...

Any possibility to solve this issue and add it to the CSSU?
