stskeeps in his role as N900 Meego HW adaptation, in his quest for as much speed as possible for Meego or ARM, talks openly very often with a Nokia ARM performance guy, and he always talks about asking the 'harmattanam team when he does status updates.
his issue are very much ARM/neon/hard FP related, and if the best person in Nokia to talk to the performance guy of the Harmattan guys is ... what do you think ? He was even saying on the hard FP issue, that Harmattan had faced this issue before the Meego team. Of course, they had at least 6 months head start.
My gut feeling, no intel in Nokia's next Harmattan based handheld ...
future will tell if they stick to ARM, i have no glass ball but I'm convinced the N9/whatever will be ARM based.

For sources, check the meego-dev mailing list archves, everything from stskeeps is very good and informative for N900 owners.

I respect your opinion but I think it's silly for the MeeGo guys to be supplied with medfield devices and told it's their reference platform, and we see nokia and intel coughing up all these drivers for medfield platform stuff. Wouldn't nokia just tell intel to write their own damn drivers, and wouldn't they be using a omap platform for more validation of the OS? I guess they have the n900 to test on, but I always thought they wanted to guarantee it works on the n900 so we don't get pissed off, not just for their own purposes. Intel does need nokia to sell some phones with intel chips for sure, nobody is going to rush out and buy an intel branded phone I bet. Also, we never heard any announcement of st-erricson working with Nokia recently, if nokia wanted to use their u8500 platform i think they would have been helping them with that! u8500 was a joint venture between the two companies, but I mean on the software side, it sounds like the st-ericsson guys were doing all the work porting MeeGo.

Oh my God, I think that was the cutest thing ever said here. Absolutely adorable.

the medfield devices are the replacement reference hw designs for the now canned Moorestown based Aava. they're only for intel architecture.

Also, in the the initial announcement in the Meego TSG it was clearly said that the i version was the consumer (finished look) version, and the N version an internal dev. version. but identical in base hw, That tells me that the Nokia version is not to be sold.

would Nokia be testing NOW on a device they're not going to sell, with the idea of later on selling the i version anyways ? I don't think so, i'm sure they would also be testing on the i version.

To me it looks the i version is a proper handheld formfactor (maybe as shown on the picture of the intel conference and the n version is nothing but the same hw in a cheaper, glorified breadboard version, pictures also leaked before.

In general, it would be a good joint development process to have 2 teams give access to each type of reference design.

even intel is testing meego on N900, it was even stated this week by stskeeps that he tought it was funny seeing an intel guy getting exited over bugs on n900, an arm platform

the 'pure' Meego world has 2 specific teams, mostly looking at their own ref. designs but also responsible to crosscheck bugs and qa reports. Open transparent joint development, not easy when competing cpu architectures are involved.

these 'pure' meego teams are technically and politically independent from the harmattan team, a Nokia only team, well hidden, only once in a while bits and pieces of info are coming out, but always in relation to the N900 meego adaptation work ...
remember, harmattan is not meego, it's an meego instance, but will be able to run the same software thanks to the Qt layers.

The Meego teams HAD to use the N900 as reference design, as the successor was not public yet, maybe the hw not fixed at the time. and they knew, once it's getting in the 'pure' meego world, then the specs etc, the competitive edge, marketing power, would be gone, as happened with the medfield devices. So they had no choice.

Nokia was already working long time before the meego merger on maemo6/harmattan. specific hw is less important for the harmattan team, nokia is big and strong enough to have multiple team in parallel doing similar things ...

maybe somebody can do a report on the dates for all the maemo bugs "fixed in harmattan". Then you could somehow guess till what time they were at least working on Harmattan.

pffff, long text to type on a N900 keyboard

Of course, these are my views, based on things i see happening, future will prove me right or wrong. i don't care anyway, i just hope my N900 gets a proper second life after all, and Nokia can stop the crazy iPhone/android future predictions, with top notch hw and a sweet but powerfull/flexible/open/appealing OS.

Remember: If it is not MeeGo enough that it passes compliance, it cannot use the trademark and thus being "compatible" is a moot point.

I suspect it is way closer to real MeeGo than before, anything else would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Finally! N9 will be able to warm those finnish guys in winter with an Atom CPU inside. There will be a sticker says "Warning: Please keep the phone operate under temperature of 10 Celcius, constantly using the device for more than 20mins each time may cause 1st degree burn in some country. Please consult with the doctor if this phone is right for your climate. "
