And most of Bluetooth keyboards/mice work, you can use BT instead of USB. Composite quality is not that bad, but still limited to PAL/NTSC resolution. Honestly I am not aware of someone tried hard to output higher resolution using external VGA, so who knows, maybe it will be available at some point(if only I have time ).

Sigh, as I was typing my reply, you replied a lot.

The standard armel repositories will have some tools that will probably work... but mixing repositories can lead to lots of troubles. Different versions of library packages, etc. The community repositories for Maemo are pretty extensive, and there's an ok VMware based cross-compiler tool kit out there to build stuff on. And yes, you CAN build stuff on the device (with a good deal of effort), but it's very slow for doing that, even with overclocking.

The display on the device is barely VGA itself (800x600?). You won't get that out of the RCA out regardless of any adapter you plug in. The output is NTSC/PAL, which is limited sub-VGA output. The only way you're going to get real VGA out is with a USB-plugin video adapter.

If video quality is a huge issue for you, you don't want the N900. It's a great device, and the display is great. But it's video-out is limited. If you want something with high-def output, get something with a mini-HDMI port. The N900 is RCA/NTSC out, or at best VGA out with a USB display adapter.

Thanks all for the detailed replies-plenty of good info to glean.

Regarding the repository, isn't it possible to install packages from the debian ARMEL repository? most of the i386 packages have been ported (based on the deb packages page).

Regarding display, usb2vga is fine but can the cpu support this? I've heard getting display out of a usb port is cpu-intensive.
Can someone provide more detailed pointers?.

I'm not planning to run cpu-intensive apps but I am interested in a mobile device capable of running reasonably-well the mainstream desktop apps.

I'm guessing it's by using the DisplayLink adaptors which have drivers in the Linux kernel already (it's been tested on the Pandora handheld by a few people). Sorry I can't provide any more information.
