Just get a phone that does phone-things, not every-things. Most people need to make phone calls, text message, maybe some gps, maybe a camera.

You can get that for cheap. I just bought a phone that does all but gps for $50. Unlocked, no plan.

When you need more, get a tablet. Forget carrying it in your pocket. You don't need that -- it's just marketing fantasy.

You may also want to look at what's eating CPU, and maybe taking some time to re-flash the device and install stuff anew. If it wasn't doing this a year ago when you got it (pausing several seconds on phone ring), then it's something you've added or changed that's causing it. One of the best parts of the N900 is that you can flash it on your own with older images or current images and re-install it without going to a shop.

I haven't had to reflash mine in the 16 months I've had it, but I also limit what I install and test it out on occasion to see if a changed setting is hurting it. (I also know a bit about linux optimization and know how to look for buggy/leaky programs. )

It could be the "new phone" you're looking for is right in front of you. It just needs a good cleaning out and detailing.

I have purchased Nokia E7. It's good communicator with excellent keyboard and quite good OS. Web browser and video streaming is better in N900 so far. WebTV in E7 is better but you can get much more provider and codecs with N900.

I just bought a dell streak 5. I love my n900 but I cant deal with swapping battery's another day.

So if theres any dev that would like to buy an extra mine is for sale, 2 battery's and charger, and USED n900 with broken usb. Right now its going to start serving as a wifi scp dropbox or something.

Great answer. Right, your current N900 should be faster than when you got it -- mine is. Overclocking and/or the Community software can give you a new phone. Reflashing is not particularly something to avoid.

I was so looking forward to the n9. But since nokia pulled the plug and went with windows, I will go with SE Xperia Arc until i find something nice with keyboard. Probably not a nokia. But you never know...

I suggest you do the same

And brings up the other thing about the N900... it's still a Nokia product and everything that implies, horrid communication and support and virtually non-existent presence, appalling repair/repalcement support, etc.
