Seriously, it states *.avi right there. He was not misled. Out of the box, he did not get what he thought based on trying to inform himself from the Maemo website.

It's not like it came from nowhere. It's an expectation that came from the site itself. Now... it's one that surprises me, but with Mplayer and VLC both in either testing or extras-testing, it'll be a very short time that this is not a spot where people will have grievances.
I guess I have just been lucky - every avi I have thrown at this N900 has played. Strange.

Anyone tried whether gmc and qpel work with mpeg4 asp/xvid/divx?
I don't know how to specify baseline in Handbrake... so I just changed the codec to MPEG-4 (ffmpeg) and it plays now.

Quality is basically on par with H.264 main I guess.

I am trying to play a file (.avi) with the following properties, but it is giving me a audio codec warning.

Audio:
0x2000 (Dolby AC3) AC3
48000Hz 448 kb/s tot , 6 chnls (3/2 .1)

Video:
XVID
XviD ISO MPEG-4

Both of these codecs are said to work above... Anyone know what the problem might be?

AC3 works if you install the additional codecs package.

Having a HD cam - using the *.mov files in "Windows Live Movie Maker" - exporting them as "wmv" file - nothing but the standard definition resolution works on the N900 - no 480p, no 720p - and of course - no 1080p. Only 640x480 is playing. All other gives a "unsported format" error.

Wasn't "wmv" supposed to be supported ??

Any ideas here? Or just one bug more?

Finding the video player on this device to be the most disappointing/troublesome I have ever come accross. Sometimes it would play a video file sometimes it would say unsupported file format for the very same file. And once I get that message no other file will ever play until I restart the device.

"WMV 9 also introduced a new profile titled Windows Media Video 9 Professional,[11] which is activated automatically whenever the video resolution exceeds 300,000 pixels (e.g., 528x576, 640×480 or 768x432 and beyond) and the bitrate 1000 kbit/s[citation needed]. It is targeted towards high-definition video content, at resolutions such as 720p and 1080p."

I suppose "Windows media Video 9 Professional" is not supported.

Standard definition AVI files work great, however. If your movie AVI file is about 700MB it will work fine on the N900.
out of the five avi movies i have tried.

three failed on video codec errors
one failed on audio codec errors
i played, but with visual artifacts

i was expecting.......................... more.

Copy mediainfo output here and it's easier to see why it happens.
