It doesn't overcome, it forces compromise.
Its adaptation.

Would you like to give me some examples of these unacceptable situations when you are using a capacitive stylus vs a resistive stylus? I know gradations of pressure are important for art.

And on the other hand I could not agree with this either.

Try using a brush against capacitive screen.
Or a stylus. With pressure and area detection.

If you actually want to use some tools to interact with a screen, the choice is resistive one.

And pls don't come up with multitouch. New resistive screens are capable of multitouch.

We just don't have enough arguments over opinions it seems.

If I'm using a stylus, all advantages of capacitive get thrown out (and then some). And I'm using a stylus.

I've written about this before, but it mostly has to do with muscle fatigue and coordination. It's the same reason we don't use pens and pencils on the tips of our fingers.

And I haven't even mentioned the proper use of hardware buttons yet.

At least we succeeded derailing the thread subject.

Try using a brush against capacitive screen.
If a resistive screen can detect the strands of a brush then that's news to me.

I totally agree though that there are more tools that can interact with a resistive screen than capacitive, that's a given. But what activities apart from semi professional Art would this be neccesary? I am intrigued.

Ummm, no I don't think so. You can use a stylus if needs be. It's classic one rule for you one rule for me so I win mentality.

Capacitive technology make it more enjoyable to use what you use most of the time (interacting with the mobile UI elements) and improves the experience of the limited screen space you have on your hand. you can do all this while holding a stylus if needs be.

I don't know much about capacitive stylus. Can they be as thin and light as the one in the N900?

Not if they are going to be reallly good IMO.

I plug this extendable one into my headphone jack which which is good size wise:

Its a bit of a learning curve getting the angle and pressure right.

But my favourite one is this type, really rounded:

Just works out of the box.

Some people vouch for this style but I haven't used it: EDITED LINK

This was OK but the tip kept coming out:

honestly, this resistive vs capacitive debate has been discussed a million times before and as daperl said things haven't changed. it is compromise not overcoming it. for example one area were resistive is not reliable is dragging with a finger because it's hard to maintain a pressure above the threshold while doing so. would software designed to use non dragging UI but simple clicks be "overcoming" its limitation? where capacitive fails is with anything but a naked finger. with gloves it doesn't work with stylus it has poor accuracy and requires a single angle stylus.
